Dwarven divers
« on: November 13, 2007, 07:22:00 am »

It would be nice, if only to salvage those previously helplessly flooded fortresses, to be able to send down dwarven divers. I picture a special helmet with an airtight hose, and a set of weighted sandals. On top a pump cramming water down the hose to the dwarf.

Increadibly strenous work, but it would be sufficient to, say, plug that leak you accidentally dug into the aquifier.

Yes, I would really really love to see something like this. It would also be extra hilarious (as many, many others have pointed out) to have the aquanaut suffocate because the pumper decided to have a snack.

dwarves should also be able to build underwater but it should take 10x as long, so you can patch up that hole in the wall you 'accidentally' dug which flooded the bottom half of your fort.

Shouldn't it be AIR that is pumped to the dwarf?  :p

I think dwarves with enough ranks in swimming should be enough for building underwater, if they will learn to navigate there and building underwater will be possible.

Water... Air... That's what I get for writing when tired. The water would be for the fire brigade, of course. The question is, what do the dwarves have that they can make a watertight hose out of?

And we could access previously inaccessible things - like a steel bolt I've got at the bottom of a lake, or the remains of the miner that had that tragic channel-digging accident.

Leather or cloth can be used to make the watertight hoses so long as they are covered in tar or a similar substance.  The problem would arise in that for every tile you go you would need at least 1 leather or cloth section and it would increase its failure rate drastically.  However watertight hoses would lead to underwater explosives which would be a fun way for fisherdwarves to fish.

I don't even know about the pumping, but a dwarf with high enough swimming skill should be able to hold his breathe for a couple of minutes.

water powered pump to pump air to the aquatic dwarf?
that would work and you would have enogh water just by making a strea moving away from the flooding for the water to flow threw.
now we just need a way for the water wheel to eat a snack......

Rubber tree wood != rubber.
Rubber is made from the sap, the wood is just normal wood.
It's like calling a maple wooden sword a syrup sword, maple wood and maple syrup are not the same thing, neither are Rubber tree wood the same thing as rubber.
Not that I have any personal experiense.
