A kobold/goblin thief has just stolen an artifact worth well over 2 million dwarfbucks.

For obvious reasons, I want it back.

Now, I figured the quickest way to get it back would be to somehow kill the sneaking thief, wherever he may be.

I'm applying [AQUATIC] and [IMMOBILE_LAND] to both kobolds and goblins, but I have a few worries:

1) Will the thief still be invisible after his death? I don't want to have to sift through every single tile to find my lost artifact.

2) Will this affect the creatures not on the map? That is, would I effectively kill the entire goblin and kobold population?

3) Is there a more effecient way?

To reiterate, there is a stolen artifact that has not yet left the map. Attempts to find it in the stocks menu gives an empty list where it should be. Obviously, the thief is sneaking somewhere on the map, most likely straight off.

Well, that was quick. There was instantly a kobold corpse with my precious artifact.

After thinking about it, it seems highly unlikely that the game would even attempt to monitor the life signs of every single existing entity in the world, so that means the not shown goblins and kobolds should be fine.

You are correct. However, the instant any further goblins or kobolds appear on your map, they'll die instantly. You'd have to change the files back if you don't want that to happen.

Thief managed to sneak in at the very moment my three dwarves went on break.

The artifact pile is really deep inside the fortress, but there was also a party going on at the same time.

Just a bad combination of circumstances.

chain a dog to a restraint

Dogs that were chained to the entrance were killed by the ambush that happened just earlier, as ambushes and thieves both appear during trading time.

What part of "bad combination of circumstances" don't you understand?

just add [SEVERONBREAKS] and set the homotherm to 99999.

That should just about do it.

How do you move only artifacts?  Is there a special stock pile option?

You can have an artifact only stockpile. Just set the Total Quality to only accept Artifact on every item type then when creating all your other stockpiles disable artifact quality.

Easier to create a new artifact-only stockpile and set it to take from whichever pile has your artifact.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Well, you can't dump artifacts (the game won't let you) but artifact-only stockpiles does the trick - and one stockpile can hold all of your artifacts if you set it up right. Put it deep in the fortress at the end of a 1-wide hallway with two kittens chained in the hallway (in case one dies, you'll have the other guarding while you replace it).

For extra credit, in addition to the kittens, use a floodgate/lever instead of a door to seal it off and only open the door when there is a fey mood. Nigh impossible for thief to get to it.

For extra, extra credit, use a dragon and a giant cave spider instead of kittens.

For extra extra extra credit put the dragon in the same room as the artifacts so fun stuff happens when the dragon tries to toast the thieves.
