Saving task lists

It'd be nice if you could assign 'task lists' for various shops.  Like lets say I want to create armor.  I want a full set of iron chain.  Ideally, I'd hit the option 'task list' (or whatever) and it'd ask me what I wanted to create.  Then I'd put in the iron chain mail, iron leggings, cap, gauntlets, low boot.  Then it'd save that as 'Iron chain suit' or whatever I tell it.  Then I could queue up 5 sets of armor instead of a maximum of two.

Same for tables.  You could queue up an entire dining room instead of just 5 table/chair sets.

Not a bad suggestion. I'd use it.

And it's spelled queue. A cue is, among other things, something used to signal actions in a stage or screenplay.

Well crap.  I actually know how to spell queue but for some reason opted out of the last 'ue'.

Guess that's what you get for not proof reading.

Anyway, this would be an interesting way to help automate production more. Player defined automations, so that an order to "Make 1 Steel Breastplate" automatically backtracks along the list and does the minimum work necessary to make the item in question.

If you're asking if it's possible to queue up, say, 30 iron leggings currently, you can do that through the work manager. Keystroke combo is 'j'->'m' and then 'q' to create a new job. You can type in part of the task to refine your search when queuing up a new task, it's very fast and easy. You can order up to 30 tasks at a time, and can create as many orders as you want and set their priority. The game itself will continue to queue them up, even if some of the jobs get canceled, until all of the ordered tasks are completed.

The downside is that after a fairly short time in your fortresses life you will have to wait for the manager noble to sign off on the task, so it's a bit slow, but saves a lot of hassle.

And you can use Macro (available in 40d13) to create armor set task with just 1 key, although you can not mix both Manager Queue and Macro to get 10 armor sets.

I use autohotkey macro to access the Job Manager and macro for 4 sets of armor each press (I almost always recruits in increments of 4, not sure why).

I've been wanting to make my dwarves some steel gear, but I need to have workers constantly pumping out iron from magnatite while simultaneously pumping out coal from the lignite and turning half of it into pig iron while the rest is kept as iron for steel. As it is I have to keep a careful eye on them (set to repeat), or set one task to happen exclusively (job manager) and then the other which creates a horrendous backlog of work, where my smelters do nothing and my armourers work around the clock.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

If you set multiple tasks to repeat in a workshop, the dwarf will cycle through them. In one of my forts, I have several smelters set to "Smelt hematite R" "Make coal from bitluminous R" "make pig iron R"  "Smelt hematite R" "Make coal R" "Make steel", and they're churning it out at a ridiculous rate.
