So, elves arrived...
« on: July 18, 2009, 12:39:49 pm »

...with a TAME GIANT JAGUAR. No injuries.

I was used to elves bringing a bunch of crappy cloth and uselessly giant helmets made out of trees! They brought a giant cat that is more than willing to rip out the throat of the next goblin that so much as comes NEAR it!

Needless to say, I actually decided to make things for this caravan, so I quickly made around 200 dwarfbucks of no quality stone crafts, and ended up with... 90 in change. They sold this thing for 110. That's like selling a hovercraft to ancient egyptians for some sand!

EEEEEE! Or, rather, JJJJJJJJ!

There are dwarves that are nothing but useless sacrifices - Miners are not one of them.

ya i have a fort where they brought me two Giant desert scorpions and another (which eventually died horribly due to a really bad tantrum spiral) where they brought 4 GCS at once If you are near the terrain for the creature or their base is then they will bring you some really exotic pets and cheaply I might add.

do you have to release gcs into the wild to harvest silk?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

They brought me a giant eagle once. I just kept it in it's cage and was afraid to go near it.

they brought me a breeding pair of jaguars the first time they showed up. Couple years later, a Giant Leopard and a Grizzly Bear. Every year I hope they bring the opposite so I can start training War Bears. A diplomat just showed up to whine about my deforestation project though = /

Oh yeah. One year they brought me a breeding pair of grizzlies. I chained them up at the entrance as guards. I never had a thief in that fort.

The elves once brought me three kitten corpses, it seems dwarves are not the only species with catsplosions.

The only neat thing I've ever gotten from elves was a single jaguar. That was on the first year.

I try to give them stupidly high amounts of money for their useless crap. Now they just bring even more wood.

What am I doing wrong?

Maybe you should gift caravans with good things with lots of mugs(or food, or everything you use as wealth maker) and burn/drown caravans with wood? "Giantanimals the live giant-cages of animals" and "Moonshine the shiny moon-loads of booze" corporations will get richer and you will take care of their rivals, "Woodweapons the carping wood-wagons of weapons", "Catscats the breeding meow-cats of domination" and "Deadanimals the dead awesome-animals of miasma". And, of course, they will satisfy your "special" interests, because they know that in another case you will rename them to "Burntelves the funny warm-piles of ashes".
Or, simplier, elven race will be screened with patented Eugenic Magma Pullthelever/Eugenic Goblindrived Slowdrowner and clever elves will some day be the only elves in civ you're trading with. Remember, there's never too many tree-huggers.
Or you could kill their liason and get a bunch of free +elf cages+ and *unicorn cages* every year. Elves are good to be suddenly freed from their cages when the vile forces of darkness(elf-loving nobles, in example) arrive, unicorns are untamable but their children are.

But at first make a huge wood stockpile, not necessarily accessable. AFAIK, the bigger stockpiles will force them to bring less wood.

Almost makes me feel guilty for the Elf Pit* I'm building. Almost.

It seems very dwarven to use the hell itself as a garbage disposal. I can just see this isolated pile of goblin clothing, rotten food, and chunks of animals sitting there in a featureless plain, slowly cooking in the heat as demons pick at it.

My fortress now has a healthy population of black bears thanks to three that the elves brought me in trade (the first two were male). Recently I adapted my arena where I've been having my marksdwarves shoot at captive goblins from above, and instead dumped a bunch of bears in with them. The results were hilarious, and about half the bears ended up with names after that. If I catch any goblins in the next siege (unlikely since I have new slaughter machinery in place), I'm gonna have to try to earn the other bears names as well.

For a while though the elves haven't been bringing me much good stuff. I suspect my fortress is not generating wealth at a fast enough rate, which also explains the dearth of sieges.
