What is his favourite type of rock? He might want that specific type of rock, rather than any old rock.

So far I have played many games, also quit many games, but I never had a dwarf want a specific type of item.
They always pick one of the items I have.
Cloth is a problem... having both silk and plant cloth is a must...  :)

It is good to know that it might happen.  :)

Lock him in his workshop, seal him in with walls if you have to. That way friends/relatives will only get 1 bad thought for him dying, without seeing him die/decay/miasma. Also stops him smashing anything apart from the workshop. Then when hes rotted down, open it up and your good to go.

Also he will use ANY rock or leather, favourite types dont matter, you've probably forbidden your leather, or mass forbidden your rocks

Just a thought

I don't think this is true. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes a dwarf will want to make their mysterious construction out a specific material. It is always one of their favorites and there is no way to tell when or where a dwarf will get picky. I've seen this first hand. In fact I just had a 22 mood streak broken because a mason wanted to put bands of Kapok tree on whatever he was trying to make. I think it's a tropical tree or something. Anyway, I had never seen it. He went insane and threw himself into the chasm.

Sea Lamprey leather, that's rough. Kind of rare for trade caravans to have it.

Before you embark take a look at each dwarves thoughts. It'll tell you their favorites. Keep in mind that each dwarf might mood and require one of those favorites. It's more likely they will want the primary ingredient in their craft to be specific than embellishing ingredients (since they will always need that ingredient.) Don't make masons or stonecrafters that like stones that you don't have access too. Or leatherworkers. Carpenters especially, because there are a lot of types of wood out there that you will never have access to.

you can use df companion to check/change what they want (you can even change the type of their mood and the mood's profession).

I personally like precision cave-ins while they're still claiming the workshop. Remember to make sure that the floor directly below them has a wall.

Milaga: how did you know he wanted Kapok tree wood? Did you check with a utility or something?

I've been keeping a log of this fortress. Looking back at my notes, he actually wanted either Kapok or Cherry Opal. I had a ton of wood and a ton of gems, both rough and cut. I had no Kapok tree and no Cherry Opal. I don't think he had any other material preferences, only item or creature preferences. I had bone, shell, leather, thread, cloth, ore, blocks, wood and bars all available.

I do not think liking a creature can lead to a strange mood that requires items from those creatures. But sometimes you get dwarves that like cave lobster shells or giant cave spider chitin or something annoying to get ahold of (unless you can trade for it.) In that case, workshops with a scenic overlook of a bottomless pit is the best possible outcome.

All my information is, of course, from my experiences. But it all seems to jive with what is on the wiki.

Urist mcsoldier is unhappy because he had to kill his only child lately.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

but I never had a dwarf want a specific type of item.

Or to be more precise, you never noticed them wanting a specific item because they were able to get it.
