I was so happy to have a new mayor elected recently. He likes donkeys (got loads), dogs (even more), chalk, the colour red (the colour of everything on my map that isn't chalk or microcline) and backpacks. He mandates backpacks and stops me selling thme, but that's no issue, because I save all my leather :D

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

AFAIK liking a particular animal will just make them adopt them if one is available, it probably won't matter for things like leather wares; i.e. a dwarf has to like the leather for this to mean anything.

That said, I wouldn't even know what exactly all the consequences are of dwarf liking a given material. For one thing, they'll request something specific when a mood strikes them (e.g. gold as opposed to any metal), but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

I better hope all my dwarves demand iron or I'm fucked.

Without a preference for a specific metal, it won't make any difference to them. Your iron should suit them well unless they happen to like gold or some shit.
