My current project is a massive tank of magma supported above my map, 15z levels or so of magma, so I might add a nice vault somewhere that requires deconstruction of the tank support to get to it. I need to finish this project...

The safest vault a dwarf can build:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But there's no fun in a vault like that.

Dig below, use ramp to isolate the tower from surrounding rock.  Collapse tower.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

The tower would have been built to the bottommost Z-level, so it'd be impossible to dig underneath it.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I suppose that could work too if you had enough magma.

slaughter all the goblins. just send out brave soldier dwarves. It would be like a rite of passage. Eventually they would all be wiped out and you can just climb up and retrieve it.

you would have to temporarily block off the view with obsidian though...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

As he stated, military dwarves wouldn't be able to get through the windows, and civilians would be too scared to deconstruct them (unless they were blind).

that's why the blind deconstructor is necessary. he builds doors for the military dwarves.

Does Cave-in dust go through windows?  I seem to recall it does.  And it can be lethal if you pile on enough of it.  I've killed miners who weren't crushed by the intial collapse like that before on accident.

You most likely couldn't get close enough to rig a collapse that'd reach the tower.

I think you could probably still sneak in from the corner and fortify the level above and below so when you then opened the corner you wouldn't cause a collapse.  You can't support just from a corner so you'd need a corner and a wall anyway.  I think you could sneak in without getting line of sight to the gob.

I'm looking forward to the vaults that are going with a "Full Deconstruction" challenge. I've been thinking about how I'd do that one myself, but I wont reveal my secrets failures.

I'm kind of curious how you'd even build the glass tower defense. Setting that one up sounds like almost more of a challenge than breaking in.
