The Challenge:Urist Safecracker posts a message,
"I challenge all of you to create a vault of dwarvenly proportions. So deadly that scores will die in the pursuit of it's treasures. So dwarven that it will defy all conventional logic and scales of complexity. Build me this vault so that I may crack it and loot your precious treasures. Or I will have sent countless numbers to their death. I challenge you to a Dwarven Vault Challenge."Overall guidelines:Build it however large, small, tiny, huge, and complex as you want.
Vanilla DF (v0.28.181.40d) with a few init changes.
Invasions OFF
Cave-Ins ONAfter you have built it to your deadly specifications, reply in the thread (or PM me) with a link to the save file. Feel free to post some screens for everyone else if you want, but I'll try and do that anyway.
I will reclaim the fortress in Fortress Mode and attempt to break into your vault. (This may pose challenges to you who are using caged creatures. What I may do instead is take a portion of your population and attempt to break in without fortress reclamation.)
Vault Challenge Catagories!Submit your vault to follow one of these three below.
The Impenetrable Vault:
Nothing can be deconstructed. I will do my best to work with the current surroundings in digging paths and/or setting up methods to circumvent your vault.
I will not deconstruct and/or disassemble any; walls, floors, pumps, levers, traps, pressure plates, bridges, mechanisms, etc. I will not use any exploits to clear the way (I.E: "atom-smashing bridges"), but I will use magma if I have access to it.
Mechanical Deconstruction:
I am allowed to deconstruct any and all mechanisms, traps, levers, pumps, etc. I'll do my best to work with the current surroundings in digging paths and/or setting up methods to circumvent your vault's traps.
I will not use any exploits.
Full Deconstruction:
I can take anything down; Floors, walls, traps, levers, anything. Still no exploits allowed.
Submission of Your Vault:Submit it here and post up a link to the save file for us. Give your vault a name, maybe some spoilered screen shots, and maybe some tales or myths about it.
There isn't a submission deadline, but I'll let everyone know when I'm on my last vault.
I'll keep the following records for each vault:
Number of Urists Killed:
Number of Seasons Taken:
Number of Reclamations:
Don't worry I'll post screens and movies of my attempts of cracking your vaults. Let me know what you guys think and send me some vaults to break open!
Current Submissions:I'll be putting in links to the DFMA so the spoilered screens don't get too annoying for you guys.

About the Fortress:
Deep beneath the earth lies one of the most prized Dwarven treasures: the legendary Sculpture Garden of Sob́restân.
It is not known why or how the vault was sealed deep underground, but the horrific history speaks for itself. At the time of the sealing there was a rebellion, lead by dwarves unhappy with their leaders. Only misery followed. The great treasure buried, the dwarven fortress of Sob́restân dwindled, and is only a shadow of the great kingdom it used to be.
Vault is on the bottom level of map, and has been sunk into multiple levels of water. Simple drainage and pumping may not suffice, as the water source is the river that runs nearby. Also, all (?) mining equipment were lost in the "rebellion" (tantrum spiral), that followed several deaths by accidents (including drowning, falling from heights and being hit by heavy objects). But do not despair! You have an anvil in your stockpiles!
Number of Urists Killed During Vault Sealing Process: 6 (+lots, lots of animals)
Number of Seasons Taken: Lost count
I know, I know, I know...not mind bogglingly complex, but forgive me! This is only "full deconstruction" -design that I can think of, that can't be broken by simple mining operation
And hopefully this'll get the thread started!

Journal of Urist Safecracker:
I'm going to apologize in advance for my trite journal entries. Afraid I'm not much for writing.
12 Granite, 206
We're not quite set up but there's army of available workers and I don't know what to do with them all. A couple zones were designated to be cleared and within moments, it was free of anything at all! I know we embarked with an army, but damn.
After surveying the site, It seems as though there are two places that could be the vault we're looking for. One is further into the fortress, the other is submerged by a river at current. We've been looking at ways to cave in sections of the river and find out if that will help stop the water from creeping in to the chamber.
24 Slate, 206
The river had two openings in it that went underground to fill the chamber that we think the vault is in. The first opening has been sealed thanks in part to the other opening further upstream.
After going into the old fortress, it seems that the we thought may have been the vault was just some silly noble's room.
A couple fisherdwarves were lost to the carp in the river and ponds. Traffic zones have been set up to prevent further deaths.
25 Felsite, 206
We've begun work on a way to seal off the other water passage into the chamber by collapsing stone. If it works, All that's left is to pump out the water there and see what we can about that vault.
16th Hematite, 206
The collapse worked wonderfully and we now have the chamber sealed. Now the work to begin removing the water for easier access.
The miners suggested that they dig a chamber equally as large and drain the water rather than pump it out. Since we have more miners than mechanics, I'm probably going to designate a lot of stone to be excavated.
14 Galena, 206
We're running dangerously low on food and the drainage chamber isn't ready yet. We need to get this finished and we need to get a trader very soon. I fear the workers will die of hunger and cause riots before we even attempt to breach the vault.
24 Galena, 206
I hate to do this, but I ordered all idlers to gather plants. I feel terrible that I would command so many to become gatherers.
The chamber is still being mined out and is about 35% complete. I can't wait for traders.
14 Limestone, 206
Traders! Armok be praised, we have replenished our food stores and have had no problems with starving dwarves.
1 Opal, 206
The drainage chamber worked out well for us. The vault has been dry for only a short while as we survey the exterior from remote points.
2 Opal, 206
It turns out that the vault has an opening on one of it's floors. We'll need to drop the water level one more level and then build a floor out with some stairs for better access.
14 Opal, 206
We have just gained access to the vault. Now lets see what's in here.
It's just a bunch of empty tombs with bridge operated levers. Perhaps this vault was meant as our grave.
Screen Shots and Movies:
No maps for this one, my Map Compressor is acting up.
The Dwarven Tomb. A slinky passage way leads to the regular access point but I made my own from the open floor and ceiling in the back corner of the vault.
This is the lower level of the vault's water chamber. The drainage chamber to the south is mined out and in use storing five levels of water from the vault's water chamber.
This Giant Hole in the river lead down to the Water Chamber. It was sealed well with a bridge and floor sections.
The other river opening from the river to the underground was on the edge of the map. I couldn't build pumps so I had to find another solution.
I had to collapse the stone in the passage the water was using to get to the underground water chamber.

About the Fortress:
A human, an elf, and a dwarf walk into a bar. The dwarf says, "Hey, you two ever 'ear o' tha' fortress, Kikrostbisek, up in the mountains there, wha' with the disappearin' an' such?"
The elf bespake, "Yea, that I have, O stout friend of mine! I have overheard strange rumors wherein the inhabitants thereof did verily anger an anciant god of the very volcano they setteled on. This, I eavesdropped, resulted in their rather immediate and unfortunate being set on fire. What do you think old chap?"
The human said, "I heard that they were under siege from goblins for so long, that they went crazy and jumoed into the volcano!"
The dwarf interjected, "Yer both wrong! Wha' really happened was tha' they were too greedy for their own good, and dug straigh' for the heart o' the mountain, and unleashed a terrible evil contained within."
The human said, "I've also heard about a vault that they hid somewhere in the volcano."
The elf did reply, "Yes, the so-called "Stock of the Devil", eh wot."
The dwarf drank, "*gulp* Yeah. I 'eard tha' they rose up a second magma pipe to contain it in. Makes me wonder wha's indide o' tha' thing. *hic*"
