Vault Challenge
« on: July 17, 2009, 11:30:50 pm »

The Challenge:
Urist Safecracker posts a message,
"I challenge all of you to create a vault of dwarvenly proportions. So deadly that scores will die in the pursuit of it's treasures. So dwarven that it will defy all conventional logic and scales of complexity. Build me this vault so that I may crack it and loot your precious treasures. Or I will have sent countless numbers to their death. I challenge you to a Dwarven Vault Challenge."

Overall guidelines:
Build it however large, small, tiny, huge, and complex as you want.
Vanilla DF (v0.28.181.40d) with a few init changes.

I'm being extremely blind as I don't see any sub forums anywhere. Could I get a pointer?

I will not use any exploits to clear the way (I.E: "atom-smashing bridges") . . .

I don't think those will help anyway, unless the only thing preventing access to the fault is the low FPS caused by thousands of stones.

Capture horrifying creatures and dump them into the space surrounding the vault? :o

I'd feel better if you just DL'd the vanilla version. That way when I get your save file, I don't need to DL any mods and worry about anything.

Wow this idea really sparked my imagination on what's possible in DF. I think I'll try a Full Deconstruction Vault.

Hmm. I've been working on plans for a vault for full deconstruction vault that will have a clever system that encases any objects in lava, with a double box moat going around the entire obsidian block the moment a necessary lever is pulled. Deconstruction wouldn't help there..

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Full Deconstruction: Sculpture Garden of Sob́restân

Deep beneath the earth lies one of the most prized Dwarven treasures: the legendary Sculpture Garden of Sob́restân.

It is not known why or how the vault was sealed deep underground, but the horrific history speaks for itself. At the time of the sealing there was a rebellion, lead by dwarves unhappy with their leaders. Only misery followed. The great treasure buried, the dwarven fortress of Sob́restân dwindled, and is only a shadow of the great kingdom it used to be.

Vault is on the bottom level of map, and has been sunk into multiple levels of water. Simple drainage and pumping may not suffice, as the water source is the river that runs nearby. Also, all (?) mining equipment were lost in the "rebellion" (tantrum spiral), that followed several deaths by accidents (including drowning, falling from heights and being hit by heavy objects). But do not despair! You have an anvil in your stockpiles!

Number of Urists Killed During Vault Sealing Process: 6 (+lots, lots of animals)
Number of Seasons Taken: Lost count

I know, I know, I know...not mind bogglingly complex, but forgive me! This is only "full deconstruction" -design that I can think of, that can't be broken by simple mining operation :-[ And hopefully this'll get the thread started!

Here is a link to the save I sent to Dakira:

That map is on an unmodded latest release version of the game (v0.28.181.40d, 6.9 MB, posted September 6, 2008).

You should put a Dragon in once you're finished.

Then mod in Halflings as playable races in Adventure mode, take a company of Dwarves... Ooh, I think I'm getting goosebumps.
