Rotting food
« on: July 17, 2009, 01:47:00 am »

I have a lot of prepared meals sitting in my food stockpiles, lots of barrels, lots of idle dwarfs with food hauling and yet no one is putting the food in barrels. Anyone have any idea what is happening?

prepared food in stacks of more than 10 will not fit in barrels.

You don't need them in barrels anyway, unless the stockpile is outside. Prepared meals in a stockpile indoors will never rot.

Ah ok. Also I am making a tower, so do they have to be underground or just inside?

I'm pretty sure 'inside' is fine. I haven't tested this to be certain but I have never seen a prepared meal rot while inside if it is in a stockpile.

Also (this thread is not the pace for it, but… eh) speaking of inside, when I tell my dwarfs to stay inside they all run under ground and yet I constantly read about people building roofs over there pillboxes so that there dwarfs can stay there. what is up with that?

I have the same issue, and the only way i've found of making them stay in a pillbox is to have made a cast obsidian roof over it... so i'd like to know if it's possible with just a constructed roof.

The "Dwarves stay inside" order seems to be somewhat of a misnomer, in that it really means "Dwarves stay underground".

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
