Most uneventful fort ever
« on: July 16, 2009, 03:37:58 pm »

It's my sixth year and I'm having the best fort I've ever had, when I realize...
NOTHING'S HAPPENED.
Well, except a goblin ambush and the occasional strange mood, but aside from that, nothing.
3 deaths: a sparring accident, and 2 casualties from the ambush.
Oh, and did I mention? The mountain is EVIL!
What the hell?
Why won't anything happen?

Stuff doesn't happen on its own. Usually there are player triggers based on fortress progress.

So you need to vastly increase your wealth, as that's usually the trigger for everything else, including migrants and goblin attacks.

I know the feeling. After six failed fortresses in Terrifying biomes due largely to Ogre attacks (I can kill one, but they always come in groups of two or three), I embarked on a Haunted biome.

My dwarves are the only living things there. It's friggin dull.

As time spent in your fortress increases, the odds that you will have a catastrophic engineering failure approach 1.

Bonus points if the engineering project involves magma.  :D

Magma on a glacier creates excellent opportunities for making a fort less boring ...

I've restarted so many forts because I get to the fourth or fifth year and go 'christ this sucks...'

I'll have a kick ass military and nothing to sick it on.

Goblins seem to be everywhere. Although in my current game the goblin civs are actually almost all humans...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Yeah, I know the feeling. My first ever evil biome was like that, a haunted mountain with two whole unspeakably evil monstrocities, a.k.a. skoats. After having read so much about the sheer terror of evil biomes, I felt cheated and abused. Damn you, undead!

But with that said, such locations are perfect for that odd time-consuming megaproject you always put aside because of some other danger to handle.

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.

I have a seven year fort with no sieges or animal attacks, the only interesting thing that happened was a guard who was not berserk, and over the course of 2 years murdered 2 people.

I'd chop off her hands, if she wasn't friends with everybody.

Hmm... I think I might just do that...

I'm thinking "Sky Fort"

Hmm, my evil biomes are only filled with a few skeletons or the occasional werewolf, all easily defeated.  I usually embark in forests, though... are shrublands or hills more dangerous?

Wow, I started building the skyfort and a goblin ambush happened, I drafted the herbalist who triggered it, and he single-handedly fought off six goblins (the entire ambush party) without a single scratch.
