(40d mac) Hunter not returning kills
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:32:41 pm »

I've got 2 hunters (technically one hunter and one ranger) out hunting wolves. There's psace in the refuse stockpile but only one of my hunters is bringing back corpses. The other hunter just keep killing and killing without ever stopping to do anything useful with the bodies. This is forcing defenceless dwarves into the wilderness where goblin ambushes could strike and all for the sake of one stupid hunter.  can anyone suggest a fix?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Is the hunter who is killing everything hunting with anything other than a crossbow? Is he getting 'Dwarf LastName cancels Return Kill: Interrupted by X' messages?

Nope. He's using a crossbow, has bolts left, kills lots of things, isn't hungry, thirsty, tired or sad. He has a strange thought that I thought you only got with heavily injured people: doesn't really care about anything anymore"

No, that thought is for dwarves that have witnessed lots of death. Since soldiers and hunters often cause lots of death, they are the ones who frequently get that trait.

You're not getting any interrupt messages, either? Herm. On the orders menu, what level do your dwarves announce cancellations?

a workaround is desinating the corpses for dumping and having a dumpsite near a butcher's.

If he killing the animal in melee? If so, and he sends it flying, he will be unable to path to it when it dies, so he'll just move on to the next target.

Just have a refuse stockpile and dwarves will haul everything in, regardless of who does it, for the butchers/tanners.

Additionally, you only really have to worry about ambushes during the first month or so of each season. Any time else is safe.

All of those I checked and they were all fine. I actually watched him kill a wolf, stand by the corpse, and then wander off to kill again. He's finally hauling his kills again, I don't know what changed. thanks for the help guys.
