I need migrants, ive got 8 rooms up for grabs and no migrants are coming, my guys are scraping for food, vermin. I know this is because of plants but i tryed making a outdoor farm in spring, i set it to spring, press enter so the plant is highlited, ive got growers but no one plants. I dont get migrants because well, cant support them, i dont think i'd like to go to a starving place either.

The point is i need halp planting..Help..

Use hunting, plant gathering or fishing. You might want to find a river to,incase you run out of booze.Make sure you bring lots of food.

For the non-plantingness itself...are you sure its spring?Im quite sure outdoor plants grow every season so you should set planting for every season.

Also more food tips.If you have booze make food out of booze by cooking.

EDIT:Also for migrants.Do your rooms have both beds and table-chair combo's?You'd also want your rooms to be high quality-smoothed and if youre still unsatisfied-engraved.

EDIT:Also Im quite sure a single huge dining room has more quality and therefore lures migrants faster.

I normally get shit loads, so I can lend you a few if you'd like?

Anyway, can we get some info?

Fortress wealth, season and year would be best.

make sure that you have the right seeds for what you are trying to plant

well, i think i @$#$ed myself over via choosing a hot climate, NO lakes, NO rivers, a few brown murky water tiles that are unsuitable for irrigation[using mayday graphics pack] it seemed appealing, my fortress is built right into the mountain so mer..

(Despite the thread title, he wants help planting, not on getting more migrants.)

Yeah, a Hot environment is a tough challenge, even for vets.

I recently posted a long rant on planting here:

Read the wiki on "farming" for full info.

In my experience, if it's the late part of a season, than it won't let you choose what to plant for that season.

Ex.
If it is late spring, than you can't change a plot's settings for spring.
However, once it turns to summer, you can modify spring again.

also check your ini-file, you might have altered it to a lower population cap and forgot that you did so.

rules of farming:
0-stock: Have seeds or collect plants from the biome you find yourself stranded in (gather plants job, eat herbs and get seeds from berries).
1-till your soil (build a farm - this requires a farmer, soil or some mud)
1a-fertilize/irrigate (not working/required yet ingame, a good thing too! You have no water.)
2-plan your crops per season - you can only plant crops you have seeds for. some plants require processing (quarrybushes/rocknuts) and some are inedible commercial crops, such as pigtails. Avoid those for now, they are a luxury.
3-sow seeds (make sure your farmer is not distracted by irrelevant jobs)
4-harvest your crops. check that everyone harvests is on ...no need to tell you to have some idlers. ;)
5-Process your fud: some crops can be eaten or brewed, some can be milled, finally some need to be processed at the farmer's workshop. (check the wiki for details)
Brewing generates more seeds per item, while some plants like longlandgrass must be brewed or milled to be edible. (! be aware that milling destroys some types of seed). The uses and ways of processing of a crop differ per plant.
Finally some plants like sliver barbs and goblinbulbs can only be gathered (in the right biome) or traded for.
6-eat/drink/cook your delicious meals (cooking can be used to create more food, but given the scarcity of foods they will probably be no time to cook, also cooked food rots when not placed in barrels.)
