Dwarf Fortress vs. Dungeon Keeper 1-2
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:18:43 am »

Here's a question for all interested:

How does Dwarf Fortress compare to the Dungeon Keeper series? What ideas can be used/reused from DK in DF?

Right away: apart from the interface, Dwarf Fortress is much better in all comparisons, in my opinion. And I'm not a guy who judges a game by it's graphics, if you know what I mean ;D...

So, let's see: Dungeon Keeper 2 (since I haven't played 1):

Different-
-Charmingly cheesy evil aesthetic, no world persistence
-finite cap on creature amount
-2D maps
-magic's involved
-is finished
-the devs ignored their geology, anatomy, and weather classes
-direct manipulation of creatures using the hand
-Disco Inferno.

Vaguely alike-
-Direct control of a normal creature in a painfully limited way (Adventurer mode vs possession)
-is of a pretty rare genre (Evil Genius is the closest)
-nearly unkillable uber-monsters only on a few maps (those stone knights on the last level vs carp
-magma is involved
- dwarves are sacrificial lambs for your slaughtering pleasure
-build up a working fortress from bare rock and kick yourself whenever you dig out places that you didn't want to
-the useless cannon fodder unit that wastes good air (soapmakers and goblins)

Hmm... I think Dwarf Fortress is more similar to Evil Genius than Dungeon Keeper.  It's got no direct control over minions (henchmen excepted), greater reliance on traps, and a persistent fortress.

Yeah, definitely more Evil Genius.

There really is no other game quite like it, though.

I recall Lego, of all things, created a game vaguely similar to DF in Rock Raiders. It was basically a mining game with futuristic tech and aliens. And Lego. But yeah, it was pretty fun.

Rock raiders got hard.
I'm still stuck on Erosion Works.

I once completed all but 2 levels... before a less-than-voluntary computer reformat.  :-[

But yeah, I'd say that the similarities to EG are pretty good:
Both games feature AI that makes you want to pull your hair out at times.
Both games feature overly-complex traps that can backfire at the touch of a button.
Both games are completely unfinished. (Of course, DF still has a developer working on it, which is one big difference.)  ;)

Don't get me wrong, I love EG, it's just frustrating that Elixir, well, died.

I was 10, and the game never ran correctly. I still have the cd, but the game won't work now.
Let's just say the game taught how to cuss. -I'm just going to mine this - fuck aliens!

Torrents are your friend, you paid for the disc so while it may technicaly be illigal you're not really doing anything wrong. See it as a retro-active backup. The game is really worth it. Also, not to clutter this thread further, maybe make EG and RR threads in Other Games or something?

I absolutely loved EG. The traps in particular.

Sadly though, the EG guys went out of business. :(

evil genius ALWAYS felt half-finished

dungeon keeper 2 suffers from limited gameplay in some respect, ESPECIALLY when compared to dwarf fortress

DK is pretty much on rails when it comes to evil, while DF gives you the freedom to evil, and allows you to take it to higher levels. Where else would you find people asking for ways to design automated systems that separate babies from their mothers and kill them?

Yeah, I've played DKI and II, and Evil Genius as well. Gotta say, DF is just what the doctor ordered.

As far as I understand, the folks working on Evil Genius had a lot of good ideas that they just had to cut, because of pressure from the publisher to release the game before the burned through any more money. One of those things I guess. :-( Was very nice style.. so tantalisingly close to being one of those simply fantastic games if it werent for a few major flaws/lack of content.

I find they are all VERY good games.  However, I find it is their differences that keep DK, Evil Genius, and DF all on my Hard Drive.  I love them all, not just for their similarities...  But also for the little quirks that are different, even if you call them flaws.  Dungeon Keeper had some very nice creatures and spells.  Evil Genius had the trap networks that were glorious in their intricacies.  And Dwarf Fort has neither, but it has an intricacy all its own in the construction of impressive mechanical works (and not necessarily traps) and the use of things you mine out as something other than just wealth.

I do however wonder quite a bit just how much Dungeon Keeper 3 would have been like Dwarf Fort...  A pity they went out of business before they could make it :(

Really all EG needed was a sandbox type mode, with more islands that you could choose on your own.

EG's main flaw was simply that it was not enough. Great start, but just didn't quite go the distance. Probably due to financial reasons. :(

EG was also easy to mod, so a lot of the problems in the retail game were fixed by us in the modding community. My military timeclocks, distracting casinos to booze up the annoying agents, and being able to adjust work profiles on various items definitely improved gameplay significantly. I'm unsure if anyone ever figured out how to create custom maps for it though.

You really aren't thinking like a dwarf.

If you think it is down too far, you move it up until it reaches an acceptable elevation.
