Dwarf Fortress mentioned in Escapist Magazine
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:39:37 pm »

Granted, it's in the letters to the editor, but it's nice nonetheless.

The only important bits of it:

Quote
The only emergent
game I’ve ever seen actually produce a
surprisingly deep personal story was
Dwarf Fortress. The thing is...who the
f*** understands how to play that game?
I don’t mean any offense to the proud
gamers who can, but I struggled with it
for hours and hear the same from most
people.

Quote
There are also plenty of individuals out
there who make indie games, of course,
but none spring immediately to mind
except the maker of Dwarf Fortress, Tarn
Adams, and the maker of Battleships
Forever, Sean ‘th15’ Chan.

PDF File

I will link more later, as I'm now too tired to think. Apologies if I'm way too late with this.

Now Yahtzee just needs to mention it in a review, and donations will come in like crazy.

And some easter eggs. "He likes stallions for their charisma."

DF poor UI is really an easy prey for Yahtzee... It would be like feeding a kitten to a T-Rex. Uselessly cruel.

Well, cool if you get to make kitten mittens. Or T-Rex mittens. Or kitten-fur-lined T-rex mittens.

The kitten playfully bats at the T-Rex's third toe, left foot!
It explodes in gore!
The T-Rex is propelled away by the force of the blow!
It explodes in gore!
T-Rex has been struck down.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I don't know, Yahtzee seems like the type that would be able to overlook the UI and praise the deep gameplay.

I don't know if yahtzee would make a review on a game barely crawling out of its alpha stage, but DF is deep (and amusing) enough to deserve one, i'd say, though this would also mean that his critics would mean more then butthurt for the fans, but could also affect the development itself.

Awesome.

Yahtzee you ordinary person you gave the godawful web of shadows a reasonably positive review, making a review on a incomplete game woudn't be out of your standards! DO IT FGT!

And make my use of font size=5 actually have a meaning.

Except DF takes much, much longer than a week to get into, which is about how long he gets to spend on any one game for the reviews before he has to stitch together the witty video and start on a different game. Wouldn't do it justice unless he'd been playing it quietly in his free time for much longer, which is probably quite unlikley.

Are you people mental?  Yahtzee's entire shtick is based on trashing EVERYTHING, and the current state of DF interface is such utter and completely unplayable he could rant on that for ages alone.

According to Sid Meiers:

"We have, amongst our rules of game design, the three categories of games.  There are games where the designer's having all the fun, games where the computer is having all the fun, and games where the player is having all the fun.  And we think we ought to write games where the player is having all the fun."

The fundamental problem with DF is that everything in its development so far is in that first or second category, the designer and computer having all the fun.
