So... The whole 'breeds genetically altered bacteria who can produce human proteins' stuff is now out of the question?

According to this bill, yep, bacteria, pigs, mice, and anything else with introduced human genomes are being thrown out with the werewolf bathwater.  C'mon crazy Republicans, you're supposed to be the guys who green-light the Umbrella Corporation supersoldier hybrids!

Ya know, I'm certainly not one to talk, but wouldn't that, you know, significantly impede the production of vaccines and cures and other stuff in the field of medicine?

Bay 12 forums: If we were to form a political party, we'd fix every problem in the world within 1 year of our election into office.

Side effects include: Undead fish, massive magma floods, renaming of cities to more dwarfy names, racism against tall people, racism against big eared people, declaring dwarves as the master race, replacement of guns with special dwarven throwing techniques and megabeasts.

I'm not sure you're getting the part where Sam Brownback is a neo-Luddite who thinks any disease can be cured by praying hard enough Santa Jesus.  And that there's a clique of Republican congressmen who will sign on to anything that might somehow someway be construed as an anti-abortion vote for their next re-election campaign.

But I'm getting a little heavy here.

Our stunning One Year Plan - Magma it all down and start over.

Somebody make a campaign poster.  We'll make it a contest.

You are forgetting a few things, after all the VN people are still alive and kicking and doing... other things.

Oh no you God damn don't!  I'm already the elected demi-monarch of one pariah state.  Like Hell will I be put in charge of sitting idly by while another nation burns to the pornographic ground.

You see, when genetic modifications come out that will become 1000x worse.
I bet there are animals with muscles which can contract and relax a lot faster than human ones. Gimme those for my legs, please. Then I want some with the potential to be trained up a lot stronger than my stock muscles for my upper body.

Heck yeah, every cyclists dream.

Oh and then... can I haz some of that code from that immortal jellyfish?

edit: about the "sacred" thing...
Yeah, I believe the body is sacred. And so is messing with it. Everything is sacred - even sinning - everything part of one big creation (or cool accident, if you will, I dont see any difference, frankly)

Can someone explain exactly what sacred means to me?
It seems like a very ambiguous (read: bullsh*t) concept, I have studied a fair amount of comparative religion and philosophy (read: got damn good grades in it whit little idea how I deserve those grades other than by being generally awesome), and I still don't get what it's supposed to mean.
It seems like an arbitrary term put on random things to handwave making them valuable without them actually being valuable at all. Kinda like modern art, except artistic value can be explained as subjective cognitive stimuli technobabble.

It's just a fancy term for "it exists"  ;D  Everbody who is trying to convince you otherwise is just straight bullshitting you   ;)

"Sacred" works essentially the same way.  It's a fancy term for personalized appreciation.  Basically, these guys are saying that human life is sacred, because they're human and stuff that makes fundamental symbols of human life like an embryo less specifically human is vaguely threatening on a deep emotional level.

It's kind of like how most people don't want to live near a nuclear power plant even though there's a cosmically small chance of it ever becoming a problem.  It's not perfectly rational no, but it's not something they just pulled out of their asses either.  Just because we die-hard cynics place no value on human life or the manipulation thereof doesn't mean other people are so easy with the concept.

Yeah.
I don't know how, but I think most of the Dwarf Fortress players are cynics.

And yeah, I don't really care about lives which I do not know about.

That ought to take some of the wind out of the Furries' sails.  Next we need to ban the depiction of animal-human hybrids in any media.
