Starting builds!
« on: July 14, 2009, 07:24:52 pm »

Post yer builds for starting a fortress! Mine is somewhat outdated as new info has come to light, and I adjust it to fit my specific position but here it is:
Grower/Cook
Grower/Brewer
Fisher/Fish cleaner/Trader
Miner/Mechanic
Miner/Carpenter
Miner/mason
Rope reed seeds (I added the [OUTDOOR_FARMING] tag)
Wild strawberry seeds
Plump helmet spawn
Plump Helmet
10 logs
Tons of alcohol/meat
4 cats (for vermin)
25 dogs (for food/bones/hides, war dogs)

You dudes?
Could someone provide me with a working build w/anvil? I can't find enough points anywhere to bring enough other stuff if I include an anvil.

I have one:
Miner/Mason------------------------------------->Secondary builder
Woodcutter/Axeman------------------------------> Sherrif for FUN reasons
Hunter------------------------------------------->Expert Elephant/Carp/Unicorn/Eleunicarp killer
Clerk/Trader/Building Designer --------------------> This guy is usually my all-purpose nobleman (That I LIKE)
Carpenter/Craftsman------------------------------> Builder,Nuff said
Metalsmith------------------------------------------>Obvious

Anvil
As many meat and dogs as I can
No booze (I hate alcoholics)
It would work if your humans.

Dwarves:

Miner/Stonecrafter
Miner/
Mason
Carpenter
Woodcutter/Woodcrafter
Grower/Brewer
Grower

Humans:
Woodcutter/Axeman
Woodcutter/Axeman
Woodcutter/Axeman
Carpenter/Wrestler
Carpenter/Wrestler
Grower/Wrestler
Grower/Wrestler

For items, I just do whatever I feel like. Sometimes I'll bring dogs, sometimes I'll sell the Anvil.

This human set up is surprisingly effective. I had an entire map free of trees in just three seasons. The two carpenters constantly make blocks and once the trees were gone I made the woodcutters into carpenters as well, so they were making blocks. I was right in making everybody trained in military because every fifteen or twenty minutes I'm ambushed by Kobold thieves.

One tried to steal a rope and my woodcutter got drafted. All I see is the kobold run after a yellow U (human), then the U turns blue and the kobold starts to run, but explodes (literally) into ten pieces all across the map, haha.

The one I'm using right now is intended to be hard. Unfortunately I messed up and it didn't save the profile, and I don't remember what skills I gave the dwarves, exactly.

The key was to have the anvil, but not much food or drink. The dorfs have to make or get their own (which is going to be harder since I forgot to bring a farmer and the river is carp-infested. Oops.)

Mechanic 5 / Weaponsmith 5
Brewer 5 / Armorsmith 5
Appraiser, Judge, Negotiator 2 each / Stonecrafter 4
Miner 5 / Mason 5
Grower 5 / Leatherworker 5
Cook 5 / Bonecrafter 5
Carpenter 5 / Axedwarf 2 / Armor User 2 / Shield User 1

That's one moodable skill each. Of course, I never get the armorer or weaponsmith in a mood ... always bonecrafter making a single bone gauntlet.

Usually don't embark with weapons, just a single pick ... quickly forge an axe and leather armor and have my carpenter act as guard for the first year (after making the beds.) After the mason carves out the main area they get to work making furniture and so on, the rest of the group takes turns mining.

Sometimes I drop the Cook and Brewer and have

Armorsmith 5 / Grower 5
Leatherworker 5 / Bonecrafter 5
Ambusher 5 / Crossbowdwarf 2 / Armor User 2 / Shield User 1

Especially if it looks like things will be dangerous.

My latest fortress is from a survival challenge issued by my friend.

7 unskilled dwarves, an iron anvil, and 2 copper nuggets.

Dwarf:
Grower 4/Cook 4/Appraiser 1/persuader 1 (to make sure they are elected leader/mayor/etc)
Wood cutter 2/Carpenter 5/wrestler 1/Axelord 2
Miner 4/Mason 5
Miner 4/Mechanic 5
Miner 4/Engraver 5
Last 2 depend on what my goals are.  Usually:
Weaponsmith 5/Armorer 5 (who becomes my low skill role filler)
some level 5 Craftsman (glass or bone) or gaurd (100% warrior skills)

early I lean on the cook to make money, and by the time I really need that engraver/mason I need less mining.

My build is a bit of a mish-mash, and I haven't taken moodable skills into consideration, but it works for now :

2 Miner/mason/engraver
1 Woodcutter/plant gatherer/axedwarf
1 Carpenter/Appraiser/Negotiator/Judge of Intent - to be elected mayor and stuff
1 Farmer/Cook/Brewer
1 Mechanic/Building designer/Furnace Operator
1 Metal crafter/Armorsmith/Weaponsmith/Stone Crafter

miner with a bit of swimming skill X2
woodcutter/carpenter
mason/building designer
grower/brewer
leader (social skills)
Metalworker (metalsmith/weaponsmith/armoursmith/furnace operator.)

2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 axe, anvil, lots of drink, lots of seeds, 5-10 plump helmets and spent the rest of points of single meats worth 2 points each.

Combined with my fortress set up it is simple and near immpossible to get wrong.
