Isn't nuking whales standard procedure?

How would it ever become standard procedure?

Any mound of sand that close to the surf would quickly erode away to reveal the whale. If they made it away, they would just use that movement device to dump it into the ocean. If they dig a pit next to it and dump the whale in, the fumes of decomposition would still get out. Might as well just leave it out.

Well, if you watch the video again, they did bury it in the sand as plan B

Ergh!  What are the townsfolk thinking!?  They could just eat it!  Removing two problems:

1. The Whale
2. Their Hungry

but it might add a third problem...

3. Death

An exploding whale is a gift that keeps on giving.

Remember folks, dead things make gasses. Gasses expand to fill whatever container they are in. If the container cannot contain the expanding gasses, the container will rupture in an explosion.

A slow explosion mind you, but still somewhat of an explosion. You just need a loose definition of 'rapid.'

Explosives are ALWAYS a rational idea.

Explosives are not always a rational idea.  They are always an awesome one, however.

Not the undead ones, silly.

Seriously, though, do whales drown if stuck out of water?

They actually die because they just can't breathe. They're generally far to big to survive on land. They are literally crushed beneath their own weight. Remember that they're used to being supported by water, in effect, almost weightless.

The whale would have exploded eventually anyway.
Things bloat with gas as they rot, right? Whales are pretty elastic, and there's a lot of guts to rot.
Sometimes, if a dead whale is found a few days after it died, it's already swollen up to bursting point.
Then they go boom.
