Yeah, I wake up easily but once I'm awake it takes extreme force of will to actually get up.  I tried putting my alarm on the other side of the room but it didn't work, I just sit there and wait for it to stop.  It goes off again ten minutes later though, so it's not totally useless.

Have you tried sleeping on the floor?

Options-

(A)sk a doctor if you have insomnia

(W)ill yourself back to sleep, using methods described in the 'lucid dreaming' thread if necessary.

(D)on't watch so much stuff on a screen late at night. It messes with thy brainly waves and makes you more alert.

or (E)mbrace your inner vampire and abandon the sun!

Brainwaves are one way of measuring brain activity by measuring electrical activity in the brain. They're a bit imprecise but have their uses.

Most geeks have the same problem of shifting sleep patterns.

Best cure: physical exhaustion.
The second best cure: deprive yourself of sleep.

Either reset internal clock by staying awake an entire night-day cycle or by just getting up early and suffering for a week.

In any case, you will need severe willpower to force yourself to fight against your nature.

Some tips I've heard over time:
Don't read/watch TV in bed, this enforces insomniac behaviour.
Don't feed after midnight. ;)
Tire yourself out a bit before sleeping, jog or train. Also the hot shower is a good panacea.
(Getting physically exhausted works better than keeping awake 24h and is more productive.)

Once awake, get out of bed.
(and drink some tea, take a leak etc. If you still have hours to morning and desire sleep, get back in.)
Putting your alarm at a place not reachable from bed is a good idea. (I turn it off in my sleep myself)
Don't ignore your alarm.
Snooze is evil, set your alarm at the latest possible, requiring instant dressing and alertness.
Or : get up an hour before required and have a morning ritual, summoning your mind back from the abyss by showering/having a relaxed breakfast/reading the morning paper. coffee!
Coffee is your demon at night and your saving angel in the morning.

Or give in and get a nightjob.
I found having a job with cycling shifts was pretty easy for me. As a benighted person, adapting to getting sleep when possible is much easier than it is for those annoying daywalkers*.
(*The ones that demand everyone starts at 7.30 like them: if you start later, you are lazy, even if you work longer hours.)

Yeah, it's sleep patterns. You just have to get used to sleeping at night. A lot of people sleep late just because they don't want to stop doing whatever they are doing at that time.. just tell yourself you have to sleep at 11 PM at latest, then shut down the computer and lie in bed.

Tire yourself out in the day.. force yourself not to sleep in the daytime so that the only time you can sleep is in the night. After a week or so, you should be used to it.

exausted≠tired

I jog late into the night all the time. No effect on sleep what so ever.

Also shutting down my computer and TV and going to bed when I have no need to only makes me feel like Im wasting my time.

Only practical way to fix your sleep patterns to is stay up the rest of the day, as Im doing now. Sure its not fun, but it works.

That's the point. Usually simulating your brain keeps you awake. That includes jogging. Jogging late into the night is going to keep you awake for a while, then exhaust you later, just like a sugar loaded drink. I didn't say you should shut down the TV, though. Watch some none-brain simulating show is a good way to fall asleep, especially when you're already comfy and sleep deprived.

One nice trick to force yourself to sleep is to force your mind to rest. Just think about.. nothing. Your brain will start generating thoughts in some dream like form.. you might see a deck of cards.. see yourself playing them.. see a card table.. step on the table.. climb out of the roof.. fly.. get eaten by a dragon... and so on. If you actually start actively focusing on something, try to clear it out of your head. See yourself running away from whatever you were focusing on. After a while, your brain should slowly go into dream mode.

I dunno, the paranoia can work against efforts to go to sleep.

As does getting proper blinds.  My sleeping patterns became a lot better afterwards, since I have a streetlight straight outside my window.

Although I also have to contend with something akin to all year round hayfever, which hampers many attempts to get to sleep.
