How To Train Dwarfs Using Real Danger!
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:49:17 pm »

WARNING:IF YOU DIS-LIKE HAVING A SMALL CHANCE THAT YOUR DWARF COULD FALL ASLEEP AS YOU DO THIS,DONT DO IT

Hello,
I had an idea on how to train dwarfs using real DF combat. Its Probably a dangerous and very fun way to train your dwarfs

first off,you need to capture a wild animal preferably one that will attack your dwarf I.E. wolf,cougar,lion,goblin,etc...
DO NOT TAME IT
second, move a dwarfthe dwarf you want to train or just want it to helplessly dieand then release it into the room with the dwarf and watch the dwarf attack or run away the creature.

why does this help?
first of all, sparring is as dangerous as hell, but this isn't well, except for the dwarf trainingas you will have a more experted army than some recruits that totally crippled ur legendary for some weird reason that makes no scenes
next, the question is,why WOULDN'T YOU try is...? HMN? even if you think this a total FAIL!!!!! you should at least try it.

Well done. this is a staple of pretty much every military in DF ever.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I don't catch things on purpose, but I do send out my military to deal with vicious threats that I don't want my hunters dealing with. That way the military only get to fight the good fights, and so they get lots of xp for it.

One problem with this is that wilderness populations are limited.

A potential way to solve this:

Make sure you cage as many females of the given creature as possible. Put them in a room, preferably chained up (if you can chain untamed creatures; I forget). Having at least one male, for obvious reasons, is also a good idea.

Then have a curved hallway or something leading outside that chamber and to where you want the fighting to take place.

This lets the untamed creatures breed in a controlled manner, so you can release them for your fighters to kill (using a lever) without depleting the population.

How do ya'll capture large animals?  Random cage traps?  Trapping skill?

Only things I manage to catch are frogs and lizards and other worthless critters.

You can actually use regular military sparring for hunters. Keep an eye on the dwarf and have him wrestle, but don't let him turn into a champion. Then remove him from wrestling and have him practice with a crossbow, again, not to a champion. Then change him from military duty to hunting duty.

Alternatively you can just cull the sparring guys with bruised spines, set them to work on crossbows, and then once they are sufficiently trained make them be hunters.

Next release you won't have to do this though. Next release you can have your guys spar up to legendary in all skills, then remove them from the military and make them be super hunters, or super woodcutters, or whatever.

I plan on having all of my dwarves occasionally wrestle so they can all sort of defend themselves.

Cage traps. It helps if you alter the terrain of the map so there are bottlenecks that animals will wander through. Then put traps on these bottlenecks. For example, remove most of the ramps on a mountain so the only way up or down a mountain is through the cage traps set up on the few remaining ramps.

Here's a further expansion on this idea. Put a large grate underneath the barracks. When a lever is pulled, all the dwarves in the squad will be dropped down into the arena. Then you open the cage traps. Training, Dungeon Keeper 2 style.

Yeah, I've considered this, but ... on some biomes this'll be somewhat suicidal, wouldn't it?

I mean, on my current biome (terrifying woodlands) pretty much everything has a very good chance of at least injuring a non-military trained dwarf. I'd think it to be so in all evil biomes, since I've had 3 skeletal goats maim a legendary champion pretty badly.

On non-evil biomes, however, this would work, if you take into consideration the population of the wild creatures, as G-flex posted.

I don't know if I really understand what you're talking about here. Is the dwarf you put in their military or civilian, because you mention they might run away. Anyways, goblins aren't very good for this because when you've captured them all they want to do is run away and will only fight in self defense. Usually your dwarf getting the first hit in there is all they require.

Large animals are captured with cage traps. Either by bottlenecks as stated above, or just by sticking them down where they're easy to get dwarf-fixed. Quality, quantity, careful observation, or just a little patience.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Captured goblins work well enough.

Just chuck them all in a pit, drop a soldier also into the pit, and after severed limbs stop flying around open the doors and clean up the mess.

some people have glass economy, other go for crafts. Myself? I run a goblin based economy. my greatest foes are also my greatest source of income. Kill the bastards and then loot all their gear. This makes for great practice for military dwarves or hunters needing a training schedule. If you set hunters to hunt with a crossbow they will slowly gain marksdwarf, ambushing, wrestling and hammerdwarf. The ambushing only happens when a creature gets in close and tries to grapple.
