Dwarves crossing rivers... walking on water?
« on: July 13, 2009, 02:18:09 pm »

Ok. I noticed that my starting dwarves were able to cross rivers without getting any of their cloths wet without a bridge.  Then what shocked me bad enough to post this was when my noble dwarf decided to take a nap in the river. Then he woke up and walked off to get more shale to build the bridge. They don't seem to fall into the river, but rather walk on the z-level above where the water is... as if walking on top of the water. I have a screenie of the sleeping noble if you want to see it.

You might be confusing a brook with a stream (and rivers are much wider) since brooks are treated as if they have a floor over them.

When you use loo(k) on the 'river' at the z level above the water, what does it say? If it says brook, then that's normal.

Yeah, brooks have a 'floor' over them that represents rocks in such prodigious quantities that they are quite fully walkable.  You can channel that floor away and they won't be walkable anymore, plus you'll discover that they are just as deep as any other water...

Which then produces a hell of alot of stone clutter on the stream bed.
