Titanic necro!

I wish I could have continued playing, but I put the game down and thus this tileset, so I could get schoolwork done.  I am terribly sorry for anyone who enjoyed it.  The good news is that I think I will soon have the time to get it up to date again.  It'll be a lot of work and I'm planning on redoing all the tiles, largely since I've learned a lot making a graphics pack for Minecraft which uses images at the same resolution as Dwarfletter's 16x16 and because so much has changed since I put this down.

It has been so long that I don't even think anyone has any idea why lignite was broken.  It'll be redone anyway so I wouldn't worry about it. Rochndil, if you still need help with MMO, I may still be able to help.

However, that work will still have to wait; I've got 90 pages of thesis to edit this week about computer graphics.

Good evening!

Thesis comes first, of course. I cheated for my MS and did a project instead, much more fun. :)

MMO is coming along, slowly. I actually expect to get some progress made this week, around and about doing tax work (oh, and my day job). I've always felt that the DLG was the coolest letter set around, and that's why I presumptively appropriated it for the MMO tileset. Right now I'm actually re-working the set, trying to revert as many tiles back to their original positions, which will hopefully make it easier to do the necessary re-mapping. There are a few changes necessary for the latest DF builds, and one advantage - a separate column selection!

Hope all else is well on your end, and as progress is made I'll be sure to post.

Rochndil, about to dive back into the dollars-and-cents world...

Well, it is a project, there is just a large paper attached to it.  A sizable chunk of it written be a teammate who is, uhh, less than ideal.  I also have to do job search this week, which is going to be fun because the industry I am looking into is concentrated two hours away, so interviews are going to be weird when I get that far.

I've been monitoring things, and what the heck is this "separate column selection"?  I feel really silly asking.  I know we've got PNGs with a real alpha channel (good news for the look of the font, that's for sure), TrueType fonts, and a boatload of new things I have to research to make sure the new tiles aren't confusing, but what are you talking about? Is this the thing in the init files that appears to allow us to change what tile is used on the end of walls?  Because that is friggin' great.  My 'O' will make sense now.

Precisely, you can now define a separate character for the wall-end column. So the letter "O" can actually look like an O now.

Rochndil, who is a little fuzzy on that alpha thing, and what the deal is with TrueType...

Picked up Dwarf Fortress again after a few years of not doing anything with it, decided to try your tileset. LOVE IT!!

I have a question, though. Would you consider taking the font you created for the set and making an actual font file of it? It's a lovely and easy to read font, and I think a lot of people would like to have it for general use. Just a thought. ^_^

Well, I found some time now that school is over, permanently.  So I redid all of Dwarfletter as a plain old tileset in Adobe Illustrator.  All anti-aliased, smooth, and revamped in numerous places, it really looks stellar.  No tricks this time around, just a tileset.  I'm waiting for the new version so I can start working on new raws.

You can get it here.

Added a basic screenshot of the site chooser to the first post, and some formatting to better differentiate the new material.

Put a copy of the tile set on a black background on the first post.

No comments?  I know there are 16 of you out there who tried it, and I would really like to know what you think of the new look.

It looks really slick in the screenshots, but sadly I don't know how to make use of it because I am an idiot and there doesn't look to be any guides anywhere on the matter.

The new one at the top of the first post is just a tileset; the dwarf Wiki can help you there on how to use them.  The other screen shots, as noted, are from the older mod which is very complicated to put together and I won't bother attempting it until the new version comes out.

Ah, alright.
After looking around a bit I found the guide you're talking about, and installed the tileset. It has a really nice feel to it; doesn't alter the game too much, like some of the other tilesets listed on magmawiki, but it's very slick all the same.

This is exactly what I was looking for. A nice tileset that doesn't change what letters with strange accents look like. In fact I always played ascii because I didn't like to see strange things in place of letters in the name of my dwarfs. I have a very minor and a somewhat major complaint tough. The very minor complaint is: I would prefer a 0 over a coffin, but that doesn't really matter. The major complain is: WTH is wrong with capital Z? It's a 3... The wiki says that Z is "sleep indicator/text", why change it to make it a 3? For me it's a major readability issue, but the tileset is BEAUTIFUL, much better than ascii, and much more legible than other fonts. I thus present you my most sincere congratulations, good sir. Please fix the Z :P

Z is a highly variable letter in the world of typography.  I based Dwarfletter, originally and now, on elements of the 'blackletter' typefaces.  If you look here you will find that Dwarfletter has a capital 'Z' that resembles most such typefaces (on that page, Schwabacher specifically).  With Dwarfletter's curves and serifs, it just looks weird if the 'Z' is like a typical one, and since it doesn't show up in contexts that are particularly ambiguous or often, I figure it is a reasonable stylistic departure from the norm.  The lower case one fits in fine with the lower case letters as is, so I left it as such.

The zero is supposed to be a zero that happens to look like a coffin.  Given it is one of the oldest glyphs in the tileset, it could use a facelift.

Thanks for the feedback.

Well this is the first time I see a Z written that way, so I was a bit surprised. I've seen Q written as 2 tough, so I guess it's kind of a normal thing.

And the zero isn't bad, but I wouldn't say that it's a zero that happens to look like a coffin, but rather it's a coffin that happens to look like a zero. That's not a bad thing, I actually dig it, looks good in game even if it's a little strange when you're looking at numbers.

Cheers, keep up the good work ;)
