“Since the volume of the spherical universe is much bigger than its outer surface, how could this be true? Hogan realised that in order to have the same number of bits inside the universe as on the boundary, the world inside must be made up of grains bigger than the Planck length. Or, to put it another way, a holographic universe is blurry.”

"Bigger" is a vague term.  Both sets have the same cardinality, no?

No, I mean if I'm a hologram, and I can't pass through, say, a solid wall, then why can we make a hologram of a solid wall and be able to pass through that?

Because it's an example of wrong human "mass logic". The world is NOT an optical hologram. The thread title has more with hype than reality. Even if the fractal universe theory is true, it has nothing to do with optical holograms except for a few common explanations of "how it works".
Moreover, you cannot translate your understanding of "macro" universe to "micro" universe, it's the main point of quantum physics.

You try to understand why the dog isn't sweet, because someone told you that there's a dog-shaped caramel out there.

T'is a Wrong approach. A mere furphy causes an avalanche of wrong opinions.
I can't fully understand it while I've written a diplom in quantum physics, at least because there's not enough info on the subject. Other people "from the street" won't understand it either.

The main problem is that this article has nothing to do with science, it's another "entertaining" thing to make people interested in press.

The main idea expressed is: Infinitesimal particles have particular reactions that defy the logic of a third dimension. Anyone who is scientifically literate would know this is called Quantum entanglement. And it is nothing like this scientist thinks. It doesn't describe our universe as a holographic projection of small particles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_entanglement . Instead it describes forces that we do not yet completely understand. Who knows how these particles are connected, there is something connecting them - whether be a hole in space or an unexplained particle. A theory expressing this connection as a fusion of two waves from each of the particles being stretched apart - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohm_interpretation. Wavelengths - not holographic appearance.
