I'm dumping Windows

And installing Ubuntu 9.04 as we speak, using the LiveCD. After a steam of constant BSODs, I'm done. I may go with Windows 7 sometime in the future, but for now, no more. Not going to deal with that BS.

You're going to have a hard time having any game-related fun on Linux. Yes, there are tons of linux-based games, but they all lack the oomph of big budget windows-only productions. Why not install Ubuntu as an additional sys and keep e.g.XP for gaming purposes?

Ubuntu is all well and good, if you know about computers and are pretty fluent in it.

I had it before, but I went back after I couldn't run Dwarf Fortress, and about 90% of my games didn't either, even with WINE.

Well, even though the rest of the people here are happy living in Windows mediocrity, I welcome you to the Linux world and understand.

Most of the points above would be solved with more people using Linux on a regular basis and they wouldn't have to pay someone fees and upgrade charges.

Indeed, while I do not doubt the computer skills of Ampersand one must understand that it takes a similar effort to keep Windows(XP, anyway) error free as installing things like Ubuntu and keeping it working fine.

XP is actually rather easy to keep rather clean, as long as you know what to do. Vista is a lot trickier.

I don't follow.

Lack of applications in a capitalist world is only solved by proving that the capitalist can make money by providing applications for said system.  You can either charge an arm and a leg for ports of applications (that will likely not sell) or not make them.  Make sense?

I've actually used Ubuntu before several times in dual boot systems, frequently made it my primary operating system, only using windows for select gaming. Now, however, i'm through.

Besides, Dwarf Fortress runs on it natively now.

I assume you are like me and have pretty much gotten sick of the games available today anyway?

Mostly. The ones I haven't gotten sick of run fine in Wine, so either way I think I'll be fine.

Dude, frikkin' GLOOM.  Linux has got some fine games, it's just a different selection from Windows.  Windows does have a greater freedom, and you do get used to that, but I can't imagine it being too hard to adapt to a Linux gaming environment.

I've never used it, but I have heard discouraging things about Wine.  That was years ago however, so I don't know how much it's improved since then.

Spoiler: STALLMAN ATTACKS (click to show/hide)

But great for you! I wish I could make the jump, but Steam runs like crap on WINE when I try it and my school would rage if I did. (ARG YOU SAVED IT ON OPEN OFFICE, NO NO NO)
