Harvesting should not grant Grower XP. This makes no sense and discourages letting anyone but the farmers do it.

Wait... WHAT?

Your farmers level up twice as fast if you disable [Everyone Harvests]

Having only farmers harvest (or no XP on harvesting) is worth it just to avoid Urist McPeasant  from being Urist McPeasant the Farmer.

and what's wrong with that? If harvesting grants no xp then your peasants stay untrained and shit forever. At least give them something. The gameplay is fine as it is in this respect. No changes needed.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Better answer than what I'd expected...

Having only farmers harvest (or no XP on harvesting) is worth it just to avoid Urist McPeasant  from being Urist McPeasant the Farmer.

This was the 'wrong' answer I was expecting...

If your 'longer growing times and more stuff in the field at once' comes into play, it could lead to the more historically accurate everyone harvests because otherwise you don't harvest enough food to survive because it rots in the field.

Uh I was only referring to the fact that your haulers, which in your scenario would also need to harvest, wouldn't get stuck with a farmer/planter title. In current DF, setting only growers to harvest does the same thing and is a pretty good motivation to only harvest with growers in and of itself.

Can you really justify harvesting wheat teaching you how to grow it? Even if you don't subscribe to removing Grower skill, harvesting still shouldn't grant XP for it

Yes it should, for gameplay reasons. Where realism and gameplay collide, gameplay wins. Toady (armok be with him) does a fantastic job of combining the two, but sometimes there's just no way to make it work. Strange that talking gives stat ups, while hauling heavy platinum everywhere does nothing for you. I think the convo skills should be reduced to half their current number, and a hauling skill added, so those poor haulers will get something for their trouble. As it is, my children are uber because they sit around doing sod all, while my haulers are weak and pathetic.

Well Harvesting is a skill onto itself, since there is no Harvesting skill I guess it goes in Farming.

Yes it should, for gameplay reasons.

There isn't a single valid reason that I can think of why harvesting should grant growing skill. There's just no excuse. As a game mechanic it's completely empty. If the amount of XP is an issue, gains from planting could be increased

The stat issue is being worked on

Well Harvesting is a skill onto itself, since there is no Harvesting skill I guess it goes in Farming.

A tangential relation to planting does not justify XP gains

true. everyone, let's stop whining and when he's done the stats changes we can whine about it afterwards.
