[40d] Drowning Merman

I haven't been able to find this bug anywhere on the list or the forums so I'm posting it here. I just started a fortress on the beach and a Merman showed up from the Western edge. On the Merman's wounds page it says he's drowning. He hasn't died but he isn't moving anywhere either. I have a screen cap if needed.

I think I had something like that happen once before. I had a group of merpeople spawn on the beach at the map edge (also happened to be the western edge) and they died there. I'm not sure if they can 'air drown' despite having lungs.

I wondered at the time how the heck they beached themselves there. I think it has to do with the shoreline outside of your embark area and there may have been a 90 degree bend or something just beyond my embark area. I took it to be a spawning glitch in my case, but since you have an example very similar to mine, it may be a real bug. On the plus side, free merperson bones! :)

Is the guy on land or in the water?

He was on land. Several more also showed up but they've all died since then. They were all on land.

At that time, I had only noticed them when I saw that there were merperson corpses on the stock list, so I don't know exactly how it happened.

Apart from probably different biomes (mine was a desert I believe) and rock strata, the eent you described sounds exactly like what happened for me.

Could you post that screen cap? Mine was quite a while ago and I didn't think anything of it at the time (free merperson bones anyway), so the only record I have of it is in my memory. I wonder if there are more similarities here than we realize.

Same thing happened to me a while back.  Didn't actually see them drowning, but dead batches of merfolk kept turning up on the beach for a few seasons.

I didn't consider it a bug.  I imagined the tide was washing them ashore where they promptly asphyxiated.  In any case, it meant free valuable bones.
