Laptop for College
« on: July 11, 2009, 11:53:12 pm »

Going to be a freshman in the fall and I don't want to lug around my desktop with me. Oddly enough Dwarf Fortress is actually something I am keeping in mind when buying this new PC. The current deskop I am running with has a 2.3 dual core. The laptop that is looking good ATM is http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dncwza1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=laptop-inspiron-1545 <----- that one.

My budget is $400 or below. Willing to go over a bit. With a 2.2 single core it seems I won't lose much in terms of playing DF which is a good thing  ;D

Good buy? Any recommendations?  Remember, cheap is good. I'm not going to have money for a loooooong time now.

as I said in another thread, I am very happy with my asus EEE 1000H class-wise. It's small enough to lug around (smaller than an A4 notepad, in fact), yet with a big enough kb and screen to type comfortably.

Missed that thread. Anyway, I think I'll stick with the one I linked to. It gives me the most bang for my buck.

It's a Celeron processor! Eh, if you wanted to you could go to the Pentium Dual Core for only $10 bucks.

Also as someone who has had to lug around a 15 inch laptop it can get quite heavy. I would say either look for a backpack which has two shoulder straps or for a 14inch model to save your back and shoulders.

Unless you drive to collage or your lecture halls are 2 minutes away. Then size doesn't matter.

First ten minutes of play I ate my loincloth and then got some limbs torn off by a super friendly rat. Thumbs up from me.

Frankly, after my success with this purchase, I dont even consider non-netbook laptops anymore. They simply take too much space, weight a lot, and eat batteries for breakfast.

I might consider a desktop for more power-intensive games modern (if there were any I played ATM), but as things are, I'd rather keep my netbook and play decent oldies.

Why do you have a phallus for a signature?

My question was why his username was "ChairmanPoo"
