I don't know why, but I was expecting something like the Toady's DF theme.  Obviously not.

I guess my only complaint is the MIDI itself - the organ volume washes out everything else.  Stylistically, it needs more of an outro if it's going to be transition music.  Does seem kind of medieval to me, if a little too "Human".  Sounds enough like "industry" to be passably Dwarven too.

What organ? Do you mean the bassoons?

That main humming instrument.  I know MIDI can't really adjust volume levels, but there's just too much of it.  Why back in the day when I tried MIDI making myself, I stuck to non-humming for that reason.  But whatever you think you can make work, it's on the right track.

Gah, my attempt at a low dwarven chorus really is overpowering everything.
I tried lowering it as much as I can, and shoved them on ppp (the lowest dynamic marking that I know).

In other news, Sibelius is being a dick to me, and not actually letting me play stuff from the program. Therefore, every time I want to hear stuff, it has to get turned into a midi. This means that I'm going to be going through version numbers quickly. With the modifications, here is Version 6:

Actually, that's quite an improvement.  I was about to say that the "choir" part was wandering all over the meter.

Okay, I'll back to tweaking Tune One later, I've already gotten some work done on the second tune.

It has the choir, unpitched timpanis (which might be better as a side drum, really), contrabassoon, and one cymbal note.

Here's the first one I made to my liking:

The problem is that it sounds to happy to be DF. I tried raising all of the 7ths, but it didn't do enough, so I also made this one:

The first one reminds me of Runescape music.
The second is better. :P

My computer is getting more dickish and not playing anything in Media Player either, so I'm going to call it a night. I'll see about getting this over to my laptop (which is somewhat more trustworthy, hopefully?) and working on tunes 3-26.
Feel free to suggest ideas for the next tune (keys, basic concepts, insruments) and comment on the 2.5 that are already up.

Note that the 8-14 second goal that I'm aiming for is about 6 measures of 100 beats/minute 4/4 time.

...this remined me of the three minute "song" that i am working out to replace toady's fine music in my game...good it may be, but i dont like it. No offense toady....I'm a "critic". This "music" however sounds no way to relate....will try to get a linkup if i can...

I don't have all that much to work with here, please note.

Does anyone have any idea how I'd go about getting a MIDI file online? Youtube won't take it directly, and my genius plan of using Windows Movie Maker to turn it into a no-video video have been stymied by midi not being recognized by the Maker.

Help please?

I know this has already been answered basically to your satisfaction, but you might look into sound fonts. It's been a long time since I've worked with them, but you can get a program that takes your midi, figures out what it's doing, and uses a sound font to make it into more realistic-sounding music. Not only does it sound better, but it is output to a more universally accepted file type, too.

I'm going to be digging around for my old notes on sound fonts and programs and the like, so if you are interested just say the word and I'll tell you all I know. It isn't much, but it'll be enough to get you started. :)

Looks like it won't work very well with my (devil spawned) Vista. Oh well, if we need to get it to something else, we can, but for now the rapid share strategy looks like it'll work.

I spent last night listening to assorted songs for inspiration (until 4 Am  :-\). I didn't really get anything all that DF related, but I think that a special tune for releases would be cool. Possibly something like A little is enough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6riDuGkad4IMaybe a trumpet fanfare.

I'm open to doing something more reminiscent of the DF music (which I like quite a lot), but I don't know the first thing about writing for guitars (even less than I know for other instruments). I do however, have access to acoustic, jazz, electric, and classical guitars in Sibelius (and electric and normal bass). I'll experiment with them for tune 4.

I'm now starting on tune #3. It's going to be in C major and will be entirely accordion. I've always like using accordions for pieces.

I'm also looking for name suggestions for pieces 1, 2A, and 2B. If anyone would want the score, it would be labeled: Dwarf Fortress Song X with a subtitle for the expressive name.
