Sym already has berries from the not-quite elderberry tree earlier.  You look around for any signs of berry-bearing shrubs, but mostly there are trees and ferns here.  The ferns near where the piglizard was standing have been quite thoroughly chewed, however.

Aandion holds his hand out for the berries. "I probably have a higher chance of getting it to come near, let me."

Iituem hasn't forgotten, he just has a day job and a website to write for and update (and promote).  This can lead to absences.

Aandion:  The creature gives a disinterested sniff at the berries you offer it and goes back to munching on the local ferns instead.

Aandion:  You try to throw the spear at the creature, but its quicker reflexes save it and your spear thuds heavily into the ground.  It bolts into the forest, its four legs carrying it away faster than you bipeds can follow.  Soon enough it is out of sight.

May I give a bit of OOC real life survival knowledge that should work in game?

"Ah well, there'll be more of them around, not the end of the world." Kadol tries to get some firewood from the nearby tree.

Since the edible looking animal got away, you may need to resort to eating berries that may or may not be poisoned. There is a fairly safe way of testing for poisoned berries:

Put one in your mouth, and spit it back out. If you still feel fine eight hours later, chew one up and spit it back out. If you still feel fine eight hours later, eat one. Eight hours later you can eat a few more if you feel fine, and just keep increasing the dosage. Presumably you'll only get sick rather then dying of poison, unless the berries are extremely poisonous.
