setting stuff afire
« on: July 11, 2009, 05:48:48 am »

AKA: being able to pour booze over incoming goblins and light it, greek-fire style, and/or link booze barrels to levers or pressure plates, and making them blow up if stepped upon.

And other non-alcoholic stuff too. I mean things like piling together wood in some place and setting it afire to make a bonfire, etc....

Heck, if the second was doable, you could theoretically do the first by dumping booze barrels into the fire to have them explode, etc...

If gunpowder ever comes in we'll need more controllable fire. I want flaming crossbow bolts etc etc...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

More controllable fire should be in waaaaay before gunpowder. People have been using boiling oil for a long time.

I'd like this once the Lighting Arc is in.

You can certainly light fires in adventurer mode already, so maybe it'd be possible to, say, designate trees to light on fire the way you'd designate trees to be cut down.  Or maybe designate things to light on fire the way you'd flag things for dumping.

Should be done. in adventurer mode it's as easy as g-(a-g), but in DF it doesn't exist at all.

How could this be used offensively? I figure you could light a dog on fire and let it attack, or just start a grass fire.

But how do you control the fire? If it gets out of hand then the dwarven fire brigade would be on it. But first they would have to attend party, eat, drink, lose job item, rest and then get killed by a fire imp that spawned from the fire. Its the way the dwarf system works.
And also then there would be the time it takes to get the water to the fire. This would mean a sprinkler system or some pipes with taps outside the forge, blacksmith, mayors room.

Thing is, controlling fire would be difficult, just like it is in real life, so it's useful, but dangerous. My god, that sounds exactly like real fire. We use it in small doses, and we try not to use it if possible, but if it gets out of hand we have specialised people to handle it.

it could be used offensively by setting fire to booze bombs through the use of flaming bolts, or controlled and fed fires could be used as a permanent wall for those without magma, or who don't want the hassle of magma. They would have to sacrifice trees to it, but it would be easier to control and manage, so the balance is perfect.

Fires of that magnitude would require shit tons of wood. Not to even speak of the amount of smoke and ash you'd need to get rid of

But how do you control the fire?

Build dirt roads to act as firebreaks.

and yes, shit loads of trees would be sacrificed to the ever burning pyre of your defences, along with all the thrallish minions it would take to keep the entire line stoked all the time. The point is, it could be done, should be done, and DF is the game to do it.

Dwaves have uses for these things!  But for some reason outside ash is not good enough, you need magical inside ash for your ashery.  Dwarves ought to be able to gather ash...
