Generally i start underground, to start off fast and get fortifications up, then i begin building above ground in later years to help with immigration, and larger sieges

A bizarre hybrid of castle and underground fortress. With an occasional pure version of any of the three.

Also, I built a tree city once. Which is to say, an airborne city supported by an obscenely large constructed tower.
Made of wood.
Surprisingly, the elves still loved me.

I built a Dwarven Castle.

By which I mean, it's a castle, but it considers mountainsides as a terrain feature. Basically, it's built half-into the mountainside, with a tall tower reaching up to the main bailey which is on a higher Z-level, and the even more main fortress, which is higher still, with flying bridges all around...

I oughta look at it in 3Dwarf.

You mean jealous - our castles are better than their's.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

I really hate advertising this now because it is looking like an one-trick pony for me. Buuuuut...

remember in-game humans are the ones who have enough spare recources to build towns out of wood recources that in most of my games would deplete the wood recourse for 3 years, and in all that time make luxorious castles.(even though I already chop down all the trees and start a raging war with the elves eventually)

Where do the humans get their stone, anyway?

Underground.

When the immigrants arrive, they see a tiny hole in the ground with a massive moat of magma around it.

It usually depends on the situation, and what it would call for.

Like my previous, more successful, fort: Mostly underground, partly above (mostly farmland and barracks/archery range/outpost and tree farms); though lacking in HFS and magma. If anything, it was more of a fractal-fort with plenty of inspirations strewn about. But in most cases, underground due to the ability to make some epic dining rooms easy.

As for access to some fun stuff, hidden or not, it also depends, am I going to Rube it up with some Goldberg action, and unleash Hell as a self-defense measure; or utilize a "fuck the world" lever that burns my enemies and let's Hell loose as it coats the land in a delicious shell of obsidian (magma burns a wooden door keeping them inside)? And to make things more interesting, have a bridgeapult to launch them (magma-enhanced HFS) into the seiges?

Hmm... choices, choices....

How about channeling 10 or so levels underground clear, and building a castle in this underground cave?
