My first megaproject, AKA the chronicles of idleness

So, in my newest fortress I decided to not kill any useless migrants, something I have never done before. This naturally left me with lots of peasants with different job names. Every hauling job was done for the next several years of the fortress, and I needed something to do. So, the mega-project ideas begin flowing! After ten seconds, I had it. Spring 203, the construction began on my newest (actually, first) mega project: a great sphinx! However, that is incredibly boring and un-imaginative. And so, I will make many, many upgrades. The first one I decided to do was to not plan out anything. That’s right, no blueprints or planning beforehand. I only plan it out as I place each piece down. I mean, I have a general plan, but nothing else. The next upgrade: a royal tomb, fit for a king, hidden inside the head! Specifically, the dwarven king queen, Ast Zasurrith, who I hope I will be able to attract here. (Side question: if the queen is listed as the ruler and there is no king listed, does that mean that a queen comes instead of a king?) I bet you will never guess the next upgrade. It involves what my project is in miniature, cages, and a three wide hallway. Go on, guess.




Yep, I will have a three wide hallway with cat cages on the outside lines!  This is my attempt at showing it to you:

The next upgrade is addressing a concern I have had with projects for a long time. The entire project might be original and fun, but the entrance is not. My entrance will be in a very original place: the sphinx’s, er, “litter maker.” I have also included a tail just for fun. At the end of the project, I might knock the nose off, but that is too far ahead right now.

If anyone wants to know the details of the map, just ask.

I will also be posting progress updates. Don’t be surprised if the entire project is posted in ten minutes, because I am playing without internet right now.  I may occasionally post the progress of my semi-megaproject, mining down the entire local mountain.

So, any feedback or ideas for the project?

Disaster hit on the 13th of mid-summer. The plan-as-you-build nature of this project made me build walls and enclose several other un-built walls. However I quickly tore down the offending walls and the day was saved. Also, a kobold thief was spotted by the legendary stripminer tearing down the mountain. He was quickly struck down thanks to the miner being super powerful with a pick, and far faster than the thief. The first and second layer of the mountain is half gone, and the bottom layer of the sphinx is almost done. The tail is looking almost done, too. A few days later every carpenter deserted his post to do random jobs, which should have been done by other people. Phooey.
Also, on the seventeenth, a metalsmith was taken by a fey mood. Woo. Also, woops. I didn’t realize I don’t have a forge yet. The weaponsmith is working on that. Observant people may have noticed I wasn’t exactly excited about the mood. That’s because the last two artifacts were useless and then promptly stolen by thieves.
The fey metalsmith began a mysterious construction with iron bars and turquoise.
She came up with… cudiststizash, scaldkindled, an iron sarcophagus worth an amazing 26,400! That’ll be PERFECT for the royal tomb! On the subject of the sphinx, the first layer has been just about wrapped up and I am removing the scaffolding from the completed tail. The cage construction has started but no merchants have brought cats yet. I knew I should have brought them along…

Guard that damn sarcophagus. I suggest a magma moat.
If you get this thing finished, we need to see a picture of it in 3-D Dwarf.

Also, if you're having problems with thieves, try chaining guard animals (any kind will do, even a kitten) outside all your fortress entrances. A kobold thief will run as soon as he is spotted.

I suggest making the magma flow out of the sphinxes nose like some kind of continuously flowing molten snot which then pools into a death pit where prisoners are executed as an offering to the great sphinx.

I suggest making the magma flow out of the sphinxes nose like some kind of continuously flowing molten snot which then pools into a death pit where prisoners are executed as an offering to the great sphinx.

As insane as that sounds it is doable.

that DOES sound cool. it also must enter the head's tomb and make a lava moat around the coffin before it snots out of the head

On the ninth of late summer, yet another disaster struck. I was building walls when a peasant was trapped against a wall and a very soft place, specifically the air of the cliff. Hopefully other people will be able to complete a ramp to save him.

Luckily, the construction was immediately picked up by someone and the peasant was freed.

Man, nothing exciting ever happens here. I embarked with a chasm and sinister surroundings for a reason, carp it! The only disasters are fixed in five seconds! *hopes that reverse psychology works on the universe*

The second floor is complete except for the cats, and the third floor is nearing completion.


It sems like magma is a popular idea. Does anyone know if it is present in all maps?


The people saying it needs guard animals will be pleased to know that I have started chaining up war dogs on platinum chains guarding the coffin and a fiendish series of traps!


Edit: Well, that project was over too soon. I think I'll make a dwarf with a long sword fighting the beast. That'll be fun!

He says he's gonna knock off the thing's nose. So that wouldn't work.
