Game idea: G.H.O.U.L
« on: July 09, 2009, 11:12:02 pm »

Ok, so I've had a game idea stewing in my head for the past few weeks. Figured I'd throw it out for you guys to think about and discuss.

Name: G.H.O.U.L: Global Heroes Operating Under License
Type: Global Strategy/Tactical Combat (Similar to X-Com)
Genre: Zombie Apocalypse

Basic idea: There is a Zombie apocalypse. The world is in dire straights, but not doomed. Major world governments are able to handle the worst of the outbreaks, and while there is significant loss of life the major industrialized nations are in no danger of falling. Third world countries, however, are a different matter entirely.

You represent a new Mercenary group dedicated to providing firepower to help struggling communities fight off the zombie hordes. You start off with a small group, and as you take on missions and make money you can expand the size and number of groups.

Game-play is much like X-Com. You build bases of operation around the world, send your squads of soldiers to go fight enemies (usually under contract, but you could take free missions to build up good will), and gradually work at saving the world. Most of your battles would be in 3rd world countries, but occasionally you'd get contracts from communities in the US or Europe or wherever which are being attacked and not getting prompt response from their governments.

Thoughts?

I bet you could use the UFO 2000 code as a base to build on, I think.

Or something like UFO: AI, the open source quake-engined remake

Sounds like an alright game but what kind of things would the zombies be able to do?  I ask this since if you have a group of mercenaries all with guns, how are the zombies going to be able to have a chance to reach/kill your guys if they have no way to attack you from far away and/or are very slow moving?

Make there be a lot of them. Give some of them ranged attacks, disabling attacks, etc.

Realistic ammunition restrictions? World is in chaos, not many more bullets are being made. What exist cost a lot, so you certainly wouldn't waste them on low level targets or freebie missions unless absolutely necessary. Non-mechanical melee ftw.

Seems similar to some game i faintly remember, something like abomination.

Not a bad idea if the setting is good and the gameplay is nice, but its not a original concept D:.

Read World War Z. Not only is an awesome zombie story, it is written with consideration of almost every aspect from combat, to politics, to emotional survival.

Yah, World War Z as well as it's progenitor, the Zombie Survival Guide by the same author. It deals with stuff really in-depth

"Kill the zombies using limited resources" seems almost more like a puzzle game.

it would be a nice puzzle game, but this works too,

you could make secondary enemies, like cultists or something, fighting you directly, but being killed by the zombies too, becoming willing subjects.

i would quite like to help with this, if its three dimensional i can do weapons modelling, and i could design some maps for joo too if you wish.

ive wanted to do something similar for the longest time.

"Kill the zombies using limited resources" seems almost more like a puzzle game.

Being very partial to Brooks works and logic in general, all resources are limited even in the best of times. In the worst of times (IE the Zombocalypse), this gets confounded quite a lot. So many enemies, so few bullets..

But there's always crowbars! And hammers. and so on. A gun is sorta messy, hard to maintain, uses up resources, and draws the enemy with it's noise. It's also very hard to aim even for a trained marksman at times. Of course melee weapons have the drawback of requiring the physical strength to use them, as well as bringing you into range of the enemy if you're not careful.

Ideally I would go for a system that allows you to carry a gun but encourages careful use of melee whenever possible.

As for secondary enemies, I'd lean more towards scavengers and bandits, as well as the military in some places - they might mistake you for infected, or simply might be assholes. Of course, if you've got vehicles and medical supplies and food at your base, uninfected humans might also be a problem.

As you can see I think about zombies a little too often. oop.

just make it a sort of living world, there could be loads and loads of different groups, with our combined awesome, we could design, animate and personalise our own group each to fit into it if you want,

what sort of model style are you having?

and what engine?

or is this just something you would like to do but not not ready to do, and we are all jumping the shark here?
