if you go into (o)ptions and (r)efuse you can tell your dwarves to dump other (k) which includes vermin bodies so you don't have to deal with miasma all the time.  I HATED cats until I found that little beauty...

rather ironic that you have to type ork to do that though huh?? ;)

the cage idea worked great, now a new problem. the food storage is directly accross from the kennels and animal trap storage but now my trapper is going down the hall and out the door to look for vermin untill he gives up, meanwhile i still have vermin in my food storage...

I swear I had a bunch of roaches that I collected into a regular cage, deconstructed it, then sold it off to the elves. Why can't you just do that?

I usually get a cat from immigrants. You'll eventually get one no matter what(and the cat is abvously forced upon you), and hopefully a second one won't came and cause a catplosion. If you want a catless one, well just spam metal barrels.

lol, the cat menace furry animals are actually annoying, making me have to get a few idled peasents jsut to clean up after their murdering of helpless vermin(that could easily be punished made profitable by selling to hippies elves). But ya, if you have a spare metal crafter get him to make metal barrels, altrenitively you could just make wood barrels and make capture animals an order at a Kennel+ the making of traps. or just ignore them(at this point I have a barrel shortage because I have so many farm plots, and no cats, so lizards are no prob).

I believe that Cold maps have very few vermin, and Freezing maps have next to none.

My standard build includes 4 cats and 25 dogs.
25 dogs for breeding for food and bolts, and 4 cats for vermin. As soon as they have children I slaughter the kittens. You don't need MANY cats, but they certainly can help and don't hurt.

I've found that keeping deep underground and using doors seem to help reduce the number of vermin. Otherwise I dont worry much about 'em...
