You came here to ask for help?  You're going to be drowned in brainstorms with no code.

lol...
It's not so much getting help but sharing the project with someone without making everything myself.  I want to experience the back and forth and working as a team.

Brainstorms are welcome once I get at least someone else.

Sure... welcome!! :)

Some questions to get to know you?
what have you used to learn? internet? what sites?
What have you done in c++?
what would you be interested on doing?
What did you do with curses?

Well..... Basically the internet, and whatever sites off yahoo, like cplusplus.com, learncpp.com,  and a couple different books is how I learned, and is continuing to try to learn.
Um.... basically some basic math functions, rngs, a random map generator in curses, and a simple student database, with not much functions...
And I am basically interested in any type of programming aspects, though with a general preference of roguelikes of all kind.
And in curses, the main thing I have done is a really basic map generator, so.... right. I am a really unskilled programmer, but is willing to quickly learn to make up for it.

I might help, but for the next week or so I don't have access to any of my stuff. I'm a pretty poor coder too - I can probably do some stuff, but someone else might wan't to look over it and make sure there isn't a better way. Oh and I lack motivation.  ;D

I do C++, and my upper limit is probably the end of that ASCII dungeon tutorial. I'm up to help with anything though - ideas, testing, code (if I know how or someone teaches me). I'm in it to see how someone who actually knows what they're doing does things, and also maybe get a bit better at coding.

Oh and someone will need to get me up to speed with curses, all I've used in the past is Dev C++

I don't know much C++, but I am very good at organizing ideas and information. I'm good at making sure every one else gets the job done. I can handle scheduling, and complex logic processes.

In general, I can get rid of headaches.

I plan to look into this.

Languages: Java (fluent), C++ (semifluent)
I tried a similar project, but failed since I tried to implement my own screen-drawing system. (C++)
I worked on an in-school project where I had to make a program for a person (client), >3000 lines of GUI code, but Java sadly.

Well... I'm liking this very much...

Do we set on a roguelike then? to avoid the need of artists and graphic libraries handling?  (that may or may not be a pain in the ass :P)

narakal: That's good enough for me.  Your knowledge of random maps may be EXTREMELY useful.  I've never attempted a random map generator.  And as you say, the most important thing is the will to learn.

deadlycairn:  We will obv check other people's code and, if needed, give our opinions or propose changes.  Always constructively.
Curses is a library that you can use in any C++ compiler.  But, yes, we should get you up to date with the curses library if we are going to use it.
Never mind if you're busy sometimes.  The most important thing is to plan the project efficiently and be consistent (even though we may have a slow work rate)

Psyco Jelly: that's great.  every team needs a manager, it can definetly be a good trait and you can help with ideas and design.

shengii: As far as I know... Java and c++ are not THAT different.  Obv, java handles memory wrapping and other stuff automatically but taking care of that will be a good challenge.

I made some project for college in pascal... but they were very badly planned and I had to spend 85 % of the project's time patching things up.  We are going to avoid that  by making a good design.

TEMP LIST:
- Alexhans (c++, curses)
- narakal (c++, curses)
- deadlycairn (c++)
- Psyco Jelly (organizing, managing, logging)
- shengii (java, c++)

Also... what compilers do you guys use? (besides deadlycairn who uses DEV)

I'm reading a book on software construction that may come in handy... :)

I'd like to help with brainstorming, and I'd help Psyco Jelly a bit by keeping a list similair to the one Toady has, with different colors to indicate progress and completion.

Well... we should start brainstorming RIGHT NOW...

We could use a couple of guidelines but feel free to give the idea in any way you like (just make sure to ID it so we can reference it easyly):
0) ID: (So we can refer to it)
1) Theme
2) Type (action, rpg, puzzle, whatever)
3) Why is the game fun?
4) develop the idea.

Remember... this is the moment to throw WILD IDEAS out there... Dont discourage other people's ideas.

I'll think a couple of ideas and write them tomorrow... right now... I gotta sleep.  almost 4:00 AM O.o

cool, thanks... start as soon as you want with the brainstorming...

I had an idea of a Magic School Simulator... (hogwarts, cough, cough) or something like that...

trying to make an ALIVE roguelike world with bits of sim in it and bits of rpg...  but I'll develop the idea later.

Every idea is welcome... no matter how crazy...
