My system clock is going crazy.
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:14:39 pm »

Well, it's running fast anyway.  A few days ago, I noticed that my computer's clock was about an hour fast.  I reset it, but the next time I looked it was wrong again.  I turned off the auto synchronization thing, which I distinctly remember turning off before, but it's still doing it.  About once a day I'll look at my system clock, notice it's 5 or 10 or 20 minutes ahead, wind it back, and then a day or so later it'll be wrong again.

Anybody have a clue what's up with this thing?  How the hell does a computerized clock run fast?

Oh the wonders of Google.

But yeah, sounds odd. Does it still happen when the computer is off? What OS are you running?

I'm running XP.  I have no idea what the clock says when the computer is off, because the computer is off.

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're saying.  I haven't turned it off in a while because I'm hosting the Bay 12 Minecraft server now.  In what I can only hope is a coincidence, that's about the same time my clock started acting funny.

I didn't Google it because I figured it was too weird a problem to ask about.  Of course, I was wrong.

I don't think I need to say you should test out that theory. As much as hosting a server for people on the internet is good for them, one needs to make sure their computer runs smoothly.
Didn't you say the computer you were running the server on was a little screwy?

Putting it near a black hole or moving it really fast should fix it. It's the only dwarven way.

Small piece of duct tape over that corner of the computer screen would solve the problem!

I somehow pictured this topic would be filled with jokes. (Heck even I had one that I forgot)

Though don't computers automatically synch their system clocks via the internet? I didn't know they didn't

Have you overclocked your computer?

(I'm sorry.)

I know a flat (or near flat) bios battery can screw with your clock, but going too fast?

It's a new one to me.

it's weird it does that when the auto-synch is on...

other than that... I dont see why a quartz digital watch (i assume its basically one) shouldnt be able to screw up like that.

I had a watch as a kid... when the glass broke and a little water got inside, it did exactly that. It started to go faster, ever acceleratin until the hours went by in seconds.

edit: something I can think of, but you would have noticed that yourself, probably: when the autosynch is on, its not always exactly ONE hour off the desired time? because, you know.... well, I guess you guess what I getting at.

It shouldn't matter. This is a mobo/cpu error probably.

"Hello?  Hello!  Is anybody out there?  I need a new battery!!  Can you hear me?  A new battery!"

The speeding up thing is weird, but when clocks start going wonky, a new battery is the first thing I look at...

Actually, I don't know if that would really help here, so...

Kind of odd that a Java-based BT client could somehow mess up my system's clock. o.O

Isn't Minecraft java based?

You really aren't thinking like a dwarf.

If you think it is down too far, you move it up until it reaches an acceptable elevation.
