dwarf fortress as reality?
« on: July 08, 2009, 03:24:21 pm »

a penny for your thoughts?

For some reason, this reminds me of me thinking what the USA's ethics page would look like.

Well, it would be confusing, for a multitude of reasons.

ASSAULT: Probably PUNISH_SERIOUS
EAT_SAPIENT_KILL: Some states have the death penalty, others don't. So this is either PUNISH_SERIOUS or PUNISH_CAPITAL.
EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER: I'd guess PUNISH_SERIOUS.
KILL_ANIMAL: Acceptable, obviously. Unless it's an endangered species or someone else's animal.
KILL_ENEMY: Only if sanctioned, though I'm pretty sure no one would give a damn if you shot an Al Qaeda member while he was trying to blow up a building.
KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER: See EAT_SAPIENT_KILL, but in this case, you'd have to have ONLY_IF_SANCTIONED to avoid executioners being criminalized. In some places, it's JUSTIFIED_IF_SELF_DEFENSE and/or JUSTIFIED_IF_EXTREME_REASON.
KILL_NEUTRAL: Definite no no. But the same problems apply here as they do with KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER.
KILL_PLANT: See KILL_ANIMAL.
LYING: About what? Perjury, fraud and libel, all of which have PUNISH_SERIOUS or Santa Claus, which is a PERSONAL_MATTER?
MAKE_TROPHY_ANIMAL: See KILL_ANIMAL.
MAKE_TROPHY_SAME_RACE: Obviously PUNISH_SERIOUS, maybe it would contribute to PUNISH_CAPITAL.
MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT: Ditto.
OATH_BREAKING: Pretty obviously PUNISH_SERIOUS.
SLAVERY: Ditto.
THEFT: Not familiar with US law on this, so I'll pass.
TORTURE_ANIMALS: Varies by state. PUNISH_REPRIMAND to PUNISH_SERIOUS, most likely.
TORTURE_AS_EXAMPLE: Obviously Appalling, due to the whole cruel and unusual punishment thing.
TORTURE_FOR_FUN: See KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER.
TORTURE_FOR_INFORMATION: Here's where it gets reaally tricky. It's PUNISH_SERIOUS in the mainland, yet in ancillary US areas, it's ONLY_IF_SANCTIONED. You'd have to have two seperate codes for those.
TREASON: UNTHINKABLE.
TRESPASSING: Anywhere from PUNISH_REPRIMAND to PUNISH_CAPITAL (if it's somewhere like a shoot-on-sight military base).
VANDALISM: PUNISH_REPRIMAND to PUNISH_SERIOUS.

It's that whole federalism and torture thing, really. Confusing. You see, with even bigger nations like India and the PRC, it's still a lot simpler.

a game so awsome that the virtual people are starting to build games themselves!

but I do hope we do not live in DF 1.0 as I fear a magma flood would be immenent, caused by an evil god

India still uses a caste system (unoficially, but still widely accepted), so it'd look more like DF in that aspect.

I often think that we could be a highly complex version of the sims (Yes, the sims we have also have their own sims game)

So by that thought, god really did create man in his image  :D

So if that's true, what is the REAL world like?

bypassing the matrix ripoff bit:

you ARE living in a simulation,
your brain creates an ego gestalt that is fed with data that is processed by other specialised parts of your brain and herded into action by hormones and feedbackloops.
Free your mind: crack open your skull and let it be free of the flesh. ;) *

edit: * I personally do not believe in minds seperate of brains or souls.

can you see your corpse typing forum messages behind the keyboard?
If not:
try poking your brain with a finger or sharp stick.. a pencil will do.
If nothing happens to your perception of reality, besides more blood, you have proven that your mind is not bound to the flesh. In that case you are free to go into the light and die peacefully knowing you have aided science. On the otherhand should your perceptioin grow dark and be distorted by pain, you can safely assume the mind is not seperate from the corpus and you will die knowing you have no soul, which should come as a relief to many.
If you do: congratulations... does it (A)type what you want or (B)typing gibberish or (C)type messages complaining about how some sool spilled blood all over its keyboard?
(A): you have an outerbody experience, cool. (B)you are braindead and have a spirit. (C)you have seperated your superego from your brain and now your brain has created a new superego, sorry you are out of your mind and home(head)less.

It is. You think you have control over your life, but you're doing only what someone else is telling you to.

Why did you go to school?
Why are you in the career you're having now?
How did you get the job you have now?

Because someone programmed you to go to school at a certain age. Someone is picking your labor and assigned your job to you. Your boss might be bossing you around, but some player assigned his boss who assigned him the job of boss.

I think this goes in a different thread :)

But mathematically, the chance is near 100% that we are.
