Vista

Downloaded 0.28.181.40d from this site and been playing it for almost a week now, and since yesterday whenever I save the game crashes. Ive tried changing the items I start with, my dwarves skills, my starting location, and its crashed for the 4 times ive tried after the first incident.

Is the game installed in Program Files?  If so, install it somewhere else.  Vista doesn't play nice with that.

e: also, when you reinstall, make sure it's with a fresh download in case your old install got corrupted somehow.

You said you had been playing for almost a week, I assume it saved okay before yesterday?
I which case I would check what has changed / been installed / updated since then.

I have this problem, though im using the mayday prepackaged DF pack, the one named DFG16..
what happened was that i saved when a titan entered the map, and it crashed (said program stopped responding) and when i loaded it, it started from that save. However, when i tried saving after this, it would crash and wouldnt save..
the "program not responding" message appears when i have a old enough fort (too big i think) but it always correct itself and save without crashing
I tried re installing and running the same save on the new install it still doesnt work
can anyone tell me whats wrong? or tell me what to post to help you guys solve this problem?

[edit] sorry i mean DFG18, the newest one, and after reading other posts regarding this problem i redownloaded 40d11 from this website, and DFG 18 again from mayday's website, re installed them into other folders (before i always just extracted to desktop and ran it from there) and still can not save without crashing

What are your system specifications?  In particular, how much RAM and free hard disk space do you have?

Uh this is a long shot, but is the DF folder marked as read-only (right click -> properties)?

Read-only means that Windows won't let the game (or you) alter the files, so it would cause those kinds of symptoms.  I'm not sure how it got that way, but unchecking the read-only box should fix your problems.

uhh tried unchecking it, and applying the changes, but whenever i go back to properties it still says its read-only
dont think its the problem though, cuz ive tried running other saves, and my back up save, on the same folder and i can save perfectly fine
