A Choice in Characters
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:16:34 am »

I'm currently writing 4 different stories based on the same thing. I'm writing books about the birth of a new set of gods in a reality in which the old gods self-destructed and their power was passed down to various newborn mortals. During their lifetime they unlock their powers and ascend to god-hood. Their are multiple planes in this reality, so not all of the gods are coming from the same world. After I get bored of making new gods, or it gets overcrowded, I will pick my favorite 3 and cause all the others to become corrupt and end each other or get ended by the 3 survivors. I currently have the following gods, with basic info:

Synk, God of Darkness
   -Evil in general
-Startes evil, turns good, reverts back to evil after he is horribly wronged
   - Male Human (Kinda)
   - Becomes a Shadow(being made of evil and willpower that has Pitch Black skin)
   -Already decided as a Survivor

Ignot, God of Fire
   -Good
-Starts as a barbarian who discovers his ablity to control fire, becomes Shaman of all tribes and fights a losing fight against elementals.
-Orc-ish, Face is slightly more normal looking but frames are still the same
-Upon becoming a god, has fire flaming from his hands and feet, making small fireballs

Aksel, God of Light
   -Polar opposite of Synk

Arcin, God of Knowledge
   -Neutral
-Starts as an orphan who becomes a Royal scribe, As he ages he aquires so much knowledge that he cannot contain it alone and creates his own personal library, Upon reaching age 90 or so he acheives god-hood in his library. Goes unnoticed until he emerges 500 years later.
   -Elven in design
-Retains the look of a 90 year old man

I also have the idea for the God of Love, but I have to decide upon the God of War first. The God of War and the God of Love are the only gods who will come from the same plane because they are going to...(Drumroll please)...fall in love. I already decided to make the God of Love female for two reasons: 1) I have no female gods yet, and 2) I can't seem to come up with a way to write about a male God of Love. When talking to my friend about this she suggested that I make the God of War female as well. When I told her about the love plot she said that a lesbian love story between the gods would be very intersting. I wanted another opinion for what I should do.

I also need ideas for other gods. I general idea or a detailed description would be fine. I just need some kind of creative kick-start to get going again.

Both of the God of War's parents were brutally killed by an invading army. He (yes he) joins his own country's army and quickly ascends in rank, being a fearsome fighter. Hence the whole God of War thing, and explaining why he actually chose that path/ended up with it.

Oooh! Someone is actually ASKING me to spit out ides? Expect me to spit out hundreds of gods until you scream at me to stop. :D

Salya, godess of love.
- good at heart, but somewhat naughty and dosn't follow anything that anyone could possibly consider a rigid moral system, think Dionysus.
- starts as a prostitute of some kind of feline people (as in a catgirl, but in not as generic, more cat in the mix, and might be based on tigers/lions/ocelots/whatever).
- she's a perv.
- upon godhood gains shapechanging abilities that lets her change herself arbitrarily as long as it keeps biological, it's as easy for her to grow a new arm as to lift the existing one. Due to the above point she uses this in al kinds of deprived ways, and spends almost as much time as a male that she does as a female. (solves your lesbian problem, maybe) Also, she tends to have tentacles.
- you do not have to write specifics out about stuff she does, in fact I don't recommend it.
- other godly abilities include changing the form of others, controlling pheromones and hormones, a general knowledge of biology, the abilities to grant aspects of soul and biology onto artificial entities like undead/golems/AI/works of art/Pinocchio, and the obvious clichéd stuff, and general powers all the gods have.
- while a perv, she is tactful and would never dream of approaching someone without consent or anything other pervs are infamous for, she is still a contact junkie without the perv aspects and loves hugging. Despite her pervyness she gives a very innocent impression, she is always cheerful and sometimes "bubbly".

Terophoea, godess of war.
- good, but somewhat spiteful.
- as for background story, think Disney's Mulan, basically she comes from a society that usually don't allow females to fight, but sneaks into the army and becomes a hero, cue intrigue ending in the invention of feminism and her being responsible for saving the empire several times over.
- Her colours are those of her empire: red and orange. She is tall, muscular, hard to imagine wearing anything other than platemail, and has long lowing red hair. Her eyes however are blue, and upon godhood they began to shine like torches.
- she was very strong, tactically brilliant, a skilled diplomat, and good at martial arts before godhood. That was increased hundredfold, she gained several useful abilities such as shooting lightning bolts, flying, and teleporting. The last one lets her teleport over planes. She also has extremely fast thinking and multitasking, and can slow down her subjective tim so that each second becomes a year, and can communicate instantly whit anyone praying to her, which lets her micromanage all her armies, as well as react to things before anyone else can. If you have envisioned all gods being able to do this, then hers is simply more powerful.
- in addition to her own powers, she commands vast armies, containing powerful creatures and magi users and heroes. She considers these "her people" an asset as great as her personal power.
- good at overpowered combos, like teleporting in, killing a hundred people, and teleporting out within a millisecond.

Ichatoro, god of information
- calls himself "neutral", tends to act good, does some things of questionable morality, his alignment is really kinda cryptic and uncertain, and very grey.
- from a more technologically more advanced world than the other gods (I asume the setting is generic high fantasy medieval Europe) but still preindustrial, he does however have exposure to the scientific method and theories equivalent to those of Turing.
- he was a watchmaker and an inventor, but not a genius, nor even very successful.
- his powers are time manipulation, spacetime/gravity manipulation (can be used for powerful telekinesis-style effects as well), optical powers and light manipulation (everything from holographic illusions to vaporising intensity to remote viewing), probability manipulation, and superintelligence.
- upon getting his powers, the very first thing he did was slow down time and spend thousands of years doing maths and thinking and doing experiments while only seconds passed outside, making him technically extremely old, but as no social interaction nor much anything happened during this time not much mental development did either so he seems much younger. it also drove him slightly insane.
- by far the most "modern" god, his scientific knowledge and mindset almost clashes against the rest of the setting, and if he actually taught anyone or applied it practically it certainly would. Probably the only god that truly understands how his powers work, and gain an advantage from that knowledge.
- looks like a gangly elf whit a bizarre haircut, usually wears light grey robes and a slightly insane smirk.
- Obsessed whit numbers and information, tries to always know everything. Also tend to make inventions and automate things, most of these inventions are 90% magic so they dont break the setting, but they are built more according to scientific and engineering practice than most things are, and tend to be more robotic in their behaviour.

Parapot, god of grass
- good, uncomplicated
- was a goatherd, and as such what kind of civilization he came from otherwise dosn't matter much, as he rarely interacted whit anything but his goats and the wilderness.
- from some kind of small race, akin to hobits, dwarves, gnomes etc. Basically humans but half the size and twice the lifespan. He came from a cold climate so his brown cloaks are think. He has a medium length brown beard and always carries a withered grey wooden staff.
- his powers include communication whit anything (for example animals, winds, inanimate objects, or geographical locations) and as he is nice to them they tend to obey him. he also has the ability to appear and disappear mysteriously, as well as great wisdom ad simple common sense. Isn't it sad I have to list common sense as a godly power?
- he is the protector of all open lands, the plants the grow there and the animals the feed upon it. He might appear a weak god, and in some ways he is, but then you consider that most crops are grasses, and all of them are plants, and if he simply asks kindly they will all stop growing.

Kekor, God of Stones
-Tries to help people, but often fails as he can't comprehend their situation.
-Talks slowly, and won't move from where he stands unless he has a very good reason to.
-Very tall, and has a dark greyish skin tone.
-Cannot comprehend anything involving time. (He can't tell the difference between a day and a year, both are very short to him.
-Loves to share wisdom from ages ago, though it may not apply in this setting.
-Is prone to violent chaotic outbursts every once in a while.

My conception for him is that he simply wakes up from underground one day, and sees that whichever world he is on has changed. This guy used to be a simple monk in an old monastery, before an earthquake completely buried it.

Nyvliwinn, Godess of Nightmares
-Usually appears as a 9 year old child.
-Creates horrific images in other people's minds, for the fun of it.
-Usually seems mischievous, but when someone really angers her, makes the illusions real.
-Tests people's wits constantly. If they can mentally overcome the illusions, she leaves.
-Finds herself unable to bother the insane, or children. Children have enough nightmares.

Was an insane woman who suffered a complete mental breakdown due to a traumatic event. Dialog should reflect this, and be chaotic and trail off often.

Not only is it not actually advertising anything, it's just copy/pasting word salads about gold, runescape, oil, yuan, and handbags.  It's like a transporter accident combined all the spambots into one shambling mass of online sales.

I like this god. Might make him god of "Earth" instead of "Caves".

I also like Armok's Goddess of Love idea but I'm defieitly going to make changes If I use that as a character.(Probably just mak her not a catgirl and not a prostitute)

Also, as modern as a plane will get will be steam-punkish. Maybe World War 2 if I have a surge of genius. But thats as far as it's going to go.

As vaguely cliche as it is, check out the Greek, Norse, and Hindi myths, both for ideas on gods (and their personalities) and for ideas on how gods might interact with each other and with mortals. Athena and Freya, for example, both cover "female god of war" reasonably well, and Eros (Aphrodite's son)  does a reasonably good job as a male god of love. It doesn't do much for pre-divine background, but having an "end state" to work towards seems like a good idea.

I can't seem to come up with a way to write about a male God of Love.

Slannesh, the Prince of Darkness in Warhammer and Warhammer40K is often times seen as the God of Love.

(INSERT NAME HERE), God of Definitions
--Insert Name Here has a very lame power: The ability to know the definitions of words. For example, Synk is evil. That's a fact. But what is evil? That's where Insert Name Here comes in. Synk can go over to the God of Definitions, and ask Insert Name Here what is the definition of evil. Insert Name Here can say that evil means: "that which causes harm, destruction, or misfortune". So, now that Synk knows what evil is, he can go and cause harm, destruction, or misfortune onto others.
--Aksel goes over to Insert Name Here a lot, since he is the Polar Opposite of Synk, so Aksel needs to know what "polar" means, what "opposite" means, and what Synk is doing, so he can do the polar opposite. So, since Synk causes harm, destruction or misfortune, Aksel must do anti-harm, anti-destruction, and anti-misfortune.
--Usually appears as a very old librarian
--Usually seems like an ivory tower idiot who is out of touch with day-to-day life. Often times actually an ivory tower idiot who is out of touch with day-to-day life.
--Insert Name Here took this job because he felt the reasons the Gods self-destructed in the first place was that they had to follow contradictary definitions, which eventually drove them insane. It would make sense to have one God have all the definitions, so that other Gods would go over to that God and find out what they have to do.
