***goblin death arena***
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:50:51 pm »

is COMPLETE.

backstory for those who didnt see it on the gameplay forum:

collected ambushes for 10+ years, ended up with 160+ goblins. 17 dwarves in best/2nd best full adamantine plate with masterful weapons. arena dug with a 1 z-level up balcony around. statues built on balcony so entire colony will visit the balcony, and then lock the door behind them so they must witness the carnage. 1 lever on the balcony linked to every cage. soldiers locked in arena. pull the lever. blood everywhere.

pics of arena and balcony:

now, i have the vid up at http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1514-goblindeatharena, but i do not like it w/o the mayday mod (i like the pretty colors during slaughter). i am currently attempted to register fraps, but the paypal link is broken. until then, enjoy the vid in vanilla mode!

well, it would of taken less time had i installed more cage traps early on, but i reckon it was a good 10-12 years. the first few years i only caged 4-10 due to only having 8 cages in front of my bridges. last 5 years i had walled-in walkways with 32 cage traps per bridge, so i caught all goblins (15-24) ambushing and thieving.

and thanx, i hope to get an actual mayday version up soon. wait till you see the bodies and colors flying!

How do people stand playing on a fort so long??? i always get bored after either year 5 or 7, then i either drop FPS to 5, or just lose motivation.

That was amazing dieinafire I salute you for your endurance and stamina. I noticed near the end some of the soldiers looked thirsty; I'm sure they were are relieved to be done. Anyhow, AMAZING.

Holy shiiiiiiiiiiiii

Are all the cages attached to a lever? I must see this slaughter.

Do it again with only your best dwarf.

awesome :D love the carnage, arena fights are fun, must have taken a lot of time setting up all the mechanisms for all the cages.

That was way too quick. It's as if the goblins' flesh put up no resistance at all. It reminds me of Superjail.

yes, they were thirsty, but only b/c i had to keep locking the door so they wouldn't leave the arena while i waited for others to get in.

yes, all the cages are linked to 1 lever up on the balcony. it took 2 years with 2 dwarves trading off job to complete.

idk, i thought about putting in my 3 best. if i only put 1 in, it might take forever...

i don't have orcs. i only use the mayday mod.

This is awesome. I can't imagine how long it took you to create this thing... sadly though it is a fundamentally flawed idea.

When a goblin is caught in a trap and then released, he will not fight. He will attempt to escape the fortress much like a kobold thief that has been caught. The only way he will fight is in self defense, meaning right after a dwarf has punched him in the face. If the dwarf is legendary that means it is already too late.

This isn't a battle. It's a massacre.

It's as if the goblins' flesh put up no resistance at all.

... and neither did the goblins.

Someone do the same with tree-huggers. I would, but my bloody PC's borked at the moment.

sadly though it is a fundamentally flawed idea.

This isn't a battle. It's a massacre.

i don't care. i wanted to slaughter them. they stole 2 kids in the past 15 years, they've killed who knows how many war dogs, and will NOT siege me (is it b/c i'm @ 61 dwarves??). if they fight, they fight; if not, their problem. one way or another i am making a crapton of skull totems.

i have other ideas, since i waited for a seasonal change i can re-create this over and over.
sone ideas are:

a)  1 dwarf

b)  3 dwarfs

c)  the 3 crossbow dwarfs and a stockpile of bolts (perhaps not high quality, giving the goblins a chance to fight back?)

d)  also link a cage in the middle with 20-30 war dogs

e)  unarmed and naked soldiers (more chance to fight back?)

f)  putting all the civilians in instead of soldiers

so far, a, b, and d are my favs. i can redo it probably in every 15-20 minutes (time it takes to link up last 3 cages and get all soldiers locked in), but i'd have to train all the dogs, so that would take the longest.

if you have any other ideas, let me know!

Carve a gaunlet that leads to the edge of the map so that they'll path through it.

Fill it with all kinds of randomly triggered traps (Kitten Randomness Generators), some lethal, some not.  See how many can make it to the end.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

The retreating reason is why you use orcs, they Don't retreat. you deal with them, or you hole up in your fort until they go away.
