Will crossbowdwarfs fire down from watchtowers?
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:48:46 am »

I've made a 2 level watchtower, will dwarfs fire crossbows down onto attackers from them?
Or are they only good as eyecandy.

I'd say the moral of the story is that no matter how hard the journey, how difficult the quest, how impossible the mission, it's worth it if you get to throw an orc 155 tiles and splatter him against the wall at the end.

Yeah, they will, but the enemies will have to be at least 2 squares away from the base of the tower for yours (unless you build murderholes) only balistas, and catapaults can't fire multiple Z's

So if they're designed like this:

Code: [Select]
Level 1
QQQ
Q^Q
QDQ

Level 2
QQQ
Q^Q
QQQ

Level 3

OOOOO
OOOOO
OO^OO
OOOOO
OOOOO

Then they'll shoot like this:

XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
XX     XX
XX     XX
XX     XX
XX     XX
XX     XX
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX

D = Door
^ = Stairs
X = Attack Radius
O = Floor
Q = walls

Yep, i might be a little wrong on account of the size of your guard post on top but only by 1 or 2 tiles. but other than that it should work just fine, if not, and you dwarves won't fire at enemies, then you've either got the enemies to close to the tower, or it's a bug.

PS: don't forget fortifications, or your dwarves will be pincushions if the enemy has archers

Yes and no to a certain extends.
More precisely you need a tower with fortification constructed.
Example:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
= fortification

http://www.shoden.org/images/roadtrip/GrandCanyonWatchTower_800.jpg

You shoot through the hole (fortification) at the watchtower. And, you do not have line of sight in someone that lean on the tower wall.

in DF, if your fortification is 3 z-level above, you can only cover 3 tiles away

I see.
So watchtowers are better off with just one floor/none at all.
Are there any bonusses to firing down on opponents?

I've heard that bolts do less damage when fired up z levels

None is a bad idea, because the enemy archers technically stand behind (your) fortfications as soon they reach the tower wall. With all according defense bonus.

So you want to keep them some tiles away from your tower anyway, which will alongside solve the blind angle problem. Surround your tower with a moat in 5 tiles distance for example and you can build this tower 5 levels high without blind zone and enemy movement zone overlapping.  Make this tower accessible only from underground and the defense is relatively idiot proof.

The best thing is to have no z-levels, but put a completely encircling channel around your tower and have a subterranean entrance. Doesn't work against flyers though.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I could do it with walls too, since monsters cant destroy walls.

Solution: Right-click image and block all images from that site. Well, for Firefox at least...

Walls give the enemy cover against your archers. I even chop down all trees in the defence area to minimize cover. Don't know if its useful, though.
