Can magma go though a statue?
« on: July 06, 2009, 11:14:37 pm »

So are statues magma or water permeable? I’m making a tomb for my dwarfs that will be filled with magma and I was going to use statues to plug up the way to the hallway so I need to know if magma proof statues will let magma though.

Both. Statues are not walls, except for creature movement.  (Think they can even be shot thru, tho' don't quote me on that.)

Would be awesome if they could stop water and magma, though.

The thought of a wall of statues of dwarves holding back a wall of magma behind the statues, with the statues posed as if they really held back the liquid wall of death with their bare hands, then froze in that position...is pretty badass, in my opinion.

Wouldn't the statues get destroyed by the lava?

Eh? How does a smoothed and engraved floor help?

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

Aside from the magma destroying the engravings and making your engraver unhappy, I'm not quite sure.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Depends on the building material. Most statues would (eventually) melt, but ones made from magma-proof metals and glass wouldn't...though the magma-proof qualities of glass constructions may be a bug.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Who said anything about a floor?

Follow along, I'll explain it to you.

Now, statues (in RL or DF) are freestanding - a statue won't hold back a fluid.  But a wall will hold back a fluid.  And if you engrave a wall, you can have engravings of (fill in the blank) on them, which is as close to what BB described as you're going to get, or should reasonably expect to get short of magical forcefields.

Out.

Glass, to my knowlege, melts in magma. Currently, constructions only take damage if magma is in the same square they are, so a wooden wall can hold back a volcano's worth of magma. However, if you were to try to use, say, a glass grate it would melt very quickly. The only place in magma-construction where things like nickel and bauxite are necessary is for building, say, a floodgate to control an obsidian farm.

Right - there's a diff between something adjacent to magma, and being immersed in magma.  That's why any door* can hold magma back, but if it's opened to let magma flow past it will melt.  Same w/ non-safe mechanisms - one use is fine, but that's it.

(* edit - hmmm... maybe not graphite or coal. Experiment at your own risk.  But wood or soap, sure.)
