Also what guides have you looked at?

The HellMOO Wiki mostly.

You really just need to stick with it and get a corp asap.

I'm not sure a corp would help. The problems I've been having aren't lack of money or equipment, but rather banging my head on the interface and getting around. I don't have a MUD background, the maps are huge, non-euclidean in some places, and everything looks the same. Toss in somebody killing me every five or ten minutes and again...it's not been a lot of fun.

How long does it take to get comfortable? So far I'm about three hours in.

Even so, Being a corp could help in that people will be able to help you out.
Unfortunately the best guide (Rick's) is outdated now..
You could try googling for some, though.

Use "gear" and "worn" to get an over-all look at how good your equipment is.

The map goes black-and-white when it's dark. That one took me a while to figure out and it should really tell you somewhere, but now that you know, it makes sense. Also note that it's harder to fight in the dark, so it's a good idea to carry a belt light around.

Seriously, joining a corp would help. They can supply you with equipment, answer questions, etc. Also, people are generally less likely to kill someone in a corp for fear of retribution.

Ahh yeah, it's very hard to do much at night. If you are/were still an orphan, people might be killing you accidentally. There's a commission on killing orphans and if you have a very usual name, people won't be able to immediately know if you're an NPC orphan or not. In any case, though raw, there IS a griefing rule. Killing one person over and over for no goddamned reason is against the rules, though it is legal to camp their corpse's cocoon, apparently.

For instance: "Scruffy Joe" seems like a normal NPC name. "L'il Rocketcat", less so-- I've heard many stories of players accidentally murdering new players like this. I think it's intentional.

You have to update your clone to keep your progress but that can be initially skipped by finding achievements, travels, and journals. Going to certain areas for the first time will award you a bit of XP and a free instant update.

The overall most important commands:

Quote
l (look) - to see your surroundings, of course.

tac - to see everyone in the room, and their HP and quick status.

exam - to inspect an item and all of the item's related commands: i.e.: eat noodles. This one is absolutely vital when starting. Also works on people.

ST - status. Gives you a rundown of your current health and effects and such.

SU - summary. Quick one line print out of health / money / effects / etc.

SC - score. Total readout of all character attributes.

---

For a bit of help, you can get the health display to read both numbers and a colored meter bar. I believe the command is "@prefs meterboth is on".

HellMOO is a fairly tough MUD to start with. It always helps to have played a more friendly, less hardcore one just to get settled into MUDs in general, though I know a few people who haven't-- learning in HellMOO is the accelerated, 105 mp/h into a brick wall of knowledge learning course.

Chemical, you forgot your cocoon
Also, if any of you guys still need a corp, you could always join RSM (Real Smooth Moves). Sartain and I are in it, and Im a manager so I can hire you if you wanna join.
Just a heads up(for those of you still in need of a corp), RSM got taken over by SCRUBS. Most of RSM joined SCRUBS(even the CEO).

Also Sartain: I tried to send you a text about SCRUBS, but you were offline :(

There's a mail service. Not that I know how to use it, but it's there.

Since nobody notified me of anything, I went ahead and joined WHORE. Seems like nice people

If you need any help and Vaddix is on, just ask me. I'm usually goofing off or looking for something to do other than steal pants from the NPC population of Freedom City. ::)

Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

*stuff*
You shouldn't really worry about min-maxing and all that on your first character. Get to know the game a bit, and then re-roll. Also: You can use the 'appraise' command to get an idea of how good a weapon is, what skills are needed to use it, if it needs repairing, how much it could sell for etc. However, you need some appraise skill to get a good appraisal.

In my opinion, SCRUBS is likely to get ravaged by DRS in some way soon.
Especially since Vayra left DRS to create SCRUBS.

Actually that might mean that they'd be on good terms but meh, I don't know the conditions on why Vayra left.

I didn't realize DRS needed a reason to attack another corp.

Vayra cannot be trusted on any terms, unless of course you trust him, in that case you CAN trust him. But only if you trust in your judgment to place trust in those worthy of it, otherwise it's best not to trust him, AT ALL.
