Ahh yeah, it's very hard to do much at night. If you are/were still an orphan, people might be killing you accidentally. There's a commission on killing orphans and if you have a very usual name, people won't be able to immediately know if you're an NPC orphan or not. In any case, though raw, there IS a griefing rule. Killing one person over and over for no goddamned reason is against the rules, though it is legal to camp their corpse's cocoon, apparently.
For instance: "Scruffy Joe" seems like a normal NPC name. "L'il Rocketcat", less so-- I've heard many stories of players accidentally murdering new players like this. I think it's intentional.
You have to update your clone to keep your progress but that can be initially skipped by finding achievements, travels, and journals. Going to certain areas for the first time will award you a bit of XP and a free instant update.
The overall most important commands:
l (look) - to see your surroundings, of course.
tac - to see everyone in the room, and their HP and quick status.
exam - to inspect an item and all of the item's related commands: i.e.: eat noodles. This one is absolutely vital when starting. Also works on people.
ST - status. Gives you a rundown of your current health and effects and such.
SU - summary. Quick one line print out of health / money / effects / etc.
SC - score. Total readout of all character attributes.

For a bit of help, you can get the health display to read both numbers and a colored meter bar. I believe the command is "@prefs meterboth is on".
HellMOO is a fairly tough MUD to start with. It always helps to have played a more friendly, less hardcore one just to get settled into MUDs in general, though I know a few people who haven't-- learning in HellMOO is the accelerated, 105 mp/h into a brick wall of knowledge learning course.
