I don't know, I tried to use the map after reading some help screens and then tried to move out of the mud hole (and then the game tells me to use @describe).

Are you sure that's the exact line?  It should work, but you will get an error if you type "is" instead of "as".

Back in the day, players could set their own messages for picking stuff up, dying, etc; but this was abused in horrible ways, though it was more important that most of the messages were utterly retarded, so it was disabled.
