Ye, the game distinctively lacked balance at the endgame parts of it, plus it was set up in such a way as to encourage stronger players to prey on weaker ones, since there was little benefit to attacking other stronger players, because the top tier players almost aways fell under 3 categories: rich as all hell and able to buy a mansion to live in, which are incredibly safe; guys who had a really active corp which would cover their backs; or guys who barely even need any special equipment to be dangerous or that could be dangerous just with cheap and rather easy to get stuff (most fistpeople).

That and hellmoo was constantly prey to the one greatest bane of all MUD/MOOs: corrupt admins. As in, really, really odd people that would keep getting away with shit due to thinly veiled admin support, and sometimes due to being an admin themselves. In the latest hellmoo iteration, I think more than one guy was banned because of admin power abuse.

Hellmoo is a fun game to be an asshole in, but it was just too easy to shoehorn yourself in a position that you could be an asshole and face little if any repercussions. If there was some actual risk involved, it'd be better. Plus the grindy nature of the game made this even worse. This is why the game progression got tweaked around so much, I guess.

Maybe you'd get some pata or modded jawbies and some tattered leather off them, but thats it.


Didn't even have anything of value in my apartment aside from heads.

Yea, robbery between players in any mud, and any MMO, or games like Rust or DayZ. Robbery when allowed is always the more worthwhile option. Why? Time. It takes way more time to gather resources, and items, then it takes to rob someone of them. Diamond locks were great, but it took me weeks of scavenging and grinding to get all the materiel to get one made. How long does it take to defeat it? Not weeks. Not even hours.

The other problem, is there isnt any fun means to punish robbers. The only that would make robberies high rish high reward, is take way the one thing they're really gaining. Time. Have their account, to a reasonable extent, jailed for good portion of the average time it takes to legit acquire the things they stole. And thats not fun. Thats basically telling the player to stop playing the game.

Nother thing though, is there isnt any reason ever to steal anything. There no scarcity in any of these games. Everyone can legit get everything they want.

Ye, that was also a big problem. Simulators and schematics only mattered after wipes, when nobody has anything anymore, after a while everything just gets abundant and suddenly you can get end game equipment from pretty much any corp, and robbery starts to become less and less fun other than just for the sake of being an asshole, which is fine, but got boring quickly. Hell, it got to the point that the only thing that kept the game meagerly entertaining was the drama. At that point you either played the game to be an asshole with almost no risk till or you leave the game. Also you can start another character I guess, buy why bother? Why make a brainy character when you can just buy end game shit and you don't care about breaking into apartments anymore? Why make a super combat build and then be bored forever because the only thing you can do is chug drugs for stat boosts and hit people really hard in a text based game? :v

Being a dick to people being dicks was always good fun.  And as for personal goals, I always kinda saw it as being "build yourself until you're built, then build someone else". Like, helping other players grow big and strong so they can be dicks in your image.


After that, I guess it's just a matter of taking up some kind of hobby. Like the one that got me banned In Absentia, which was howling for zombies and then locking them all in my apartment so it turned into a quantum mosh pit of the dead.

Or possibly making "porn" movies with actual scripts and acting, then watching it on the big screen.

HellMOO is the base game. This existed for quite a while. I'm not sure when the splits occured, but eventually it became three servers. MadaMOO, GilMOO, and InfernoMOO. Each is a bit different in rules, code changes, and the like, and especially admins. I dont know if there was ever a list of differences made between them.

Okay, I've only heard of HellMOO, InfernoMOO, and the long dead HateMOO.  Mind sending me the addresses and port numbers of MadaMOO and GilMOO?  Maybe if I ask on the MOOs themselves I might get a better idea.

Hatemoo was madamoo iirc. It seems infernomoo and Hellmoo are still active, and Hellmoo has 500 active players according to server stats, and there were 100 on when I hopped on. Though its as hostile as ever towards bay12. Inferno had less players, but still active.

HateMOO was MadaMOO, yes. InfernoMOO is an offshoot of Hate that was formed by some discontent goons who wanted to get away from "the blinds" and back to a more goon-oriented hierarchy while retaining some of the technical and mechanics changes from Hate.

I thought GilMOO was the original HellMOO, which has in later times been referred to as "CarebearMOO" due to the changes they made in regards to PvP activity... Although it is possible that Gilmore made some other variant because he got sick of all these damn kids hanging out on his lawn.

Infernomoo is still going strong and y'all should come back and play. I'm currently the game's #1 thief, despite apartment security being hilariously overbuffed at the moment.

Is Alastor still involved?

Alastor and Eia both recently got shitcanned. This also caused ndy to ragequit because his head is crammed firmly up Alastor's ass. He literally fired everyone from his corp, moved all his text into his corp HQ, and then logged off in there so no one could ever steal it .laugh

It is a PVP game with a relatively small world. Most of the entertainment comes from player drama in one form or another.
