LOOM re-released on Steam on July 8th!
« on: July 06, 2009, 05:10:17 pm »

Also some other games too.  Some people are very fond of Indiana Jones.  But all I care about is LOOM!  OH MY GOD THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER.  It's WONDERFULLY atmospheric, the writers (and artists!) did an utterly amazing job of worldbuilding that I don't think I've seen replicated since.

It's simple puzzle gameplay, but the story is well worth it.  I don't know how much they'll charge, but if it's $5 or less, it's worth it for EVERYONE that hasn't played it, even if adventure games are not your usual genre.  ESPECIALLY you young'uns that haven't experienced a LucasArts adventure, because this is one of the best!  It'll mean you can keep up with the oldbies!  Seriously, this game doesn't have quite the humor of Monkey Island, but it has arguably the best story of the whole genre.

Clarity...

First ten minutes of play I ate my loincloth and then got some limbs torn off by a super friendly rat. Thumbs up from me.

I beat Loom but it is one of those games that just SCREAMS Alternate ending

As far as I know there isn't one (unless you can lose...)

Supposedly, if you beat it on the hardest level, it adds another scene near the end.  I was never able to figure out what it was supposed to have added though.

I think that might be a rumor.

Anyway, this was one of my favorite games from childhood. It's a lot shorter, more linear and less complex than Monkey Island, and doesn't really have the sense of humor (it's actually really serious for the most part) but it's awesome. Plus the lack of inventory and the spell system is really unique for a game then and now.

The 'extra scene' was mentioned in the manual, I'm pretty sure.

Also!  The manual itself!  It listed like thirty spells, with places to write the notes for each one.  Only about twelve or so were actually in the game, but it gave you a real sense of what kind of power exists in the world, and left you wondering if you were ever going to learn and use that Volcano spell...

Oh yeah...if I remember, there was the manual, the hintbook, and then the spellbook...it had some cool cover material to make it feel like an old tome, and it had all kinds of spells that never appeared in the game. I think those were planned for sequels.

Does anybody know anything about the legendary extra scene? I thought I'd beaten the game on hard so I should know...

Also, I remember having two versions of the game, there was the floppy disk version and then the CD version. The CD version was updated with voiceovers but the floppy version had a few minor differences, none of which I can really remember, except that I think the floppy version had close-ups of some of the characters when they talked and the CD version didn't? Or something like that.

Ah.  I did have the floppy version...I don't remember voices but I do remember lots of close-ups.

And I think I might actually know what the hidden scene was, though of course it's spoilery.  Think 'raiders of the lost ark', though.

I somehow do remember two versions of that scene, one where it cuts away and one where he disintegrates...but I'm positive it never shows you Bobbin's face.

I definitely don't remember that. I have the game though, back at my folks' house (at least, the CD version...the floppy version, even if I still have it, probably wouldn't work on any modern computer even if I found a plug-in floppy drive)
