A small 'k' is a kobold.  Checking http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Creatures I can't see any large 'K's under that, and I can't think of any landscape/architectural/item that looks like one, off-hand.

I'd use the "(l)ook around" mode to target the tile of interest, and see if that helps, but my Adventure Mode experience is a bit rusty, I must admit.

It's the huge building where the King or Queen is at.

Humans actually don't have Kings or Queens (although they do have Merchant Princes and Princesses, however, they do not live in the keep). The Keep currently is just a huge building, mostly empty but with two chairs and generally several guards and children hanging around. If you want a quest go to the Inn.

I do too Toony man; hopefully when Toady updates Adventure mode he will allow other dignitaries to give out quests (like Merchant Princes could give trading missions or hire you as a bodyguard).

I have noticed that a couple of highly skilled warriors tend to accumulate in them, though

When you check legends mode you realize they actually call it their 'Mead Hall' despite the fact that no one in the game has any 'mead' (for that matter, none of them have honey, which is the main ingredient to mead). Nonetheless, I appreciate the Mead Hall because it means I don't need to search the entire forest, mountain home or *HORROR* dark fortress comprised of 3 different goblin towers to find someone who can give me a quest.

This.  It's a major weakness, I think, and I basically can only get quests from humans.  That is to say I normally cut off someone's head in frustration looking for a leader in the other civs.

As much as I hate serving the elves I often take their quests as they are often at war (assassinations are my favourite kind of quest) and their druids usually aren't THAT hard to find. Sometimes though I return, my enemy defeated, and find the elves had randomly packed up and left. For some reason elves love to turn into migrants.
