Man at Church Picnic Killed by Lightning
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:46:04 am »

Lightning strikes church picnic and soccer function, one man dies.

I will add nothing to this story not implied in making the effort to mention it at all, save this warranted observation - it doesn't matter who you are, what you do, or where you go, when your number's up, your number's up.

I'll leave any and all other pithy comments and admonishments to others.

I would also like to remind the preachers of the world that it is important to properly ground your microphone while preaching in an electrical storm.  I've seen a couple of those stories in the news, too.

If you've seen some certain awesome slow-motion videos of lightning strikes, you'd know that "lightning hits the highest object" is only a vague guideline.  It does not work when you're six feet above the ground in the middle of an open field.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X_7YRVGvtA

Whichever fork hits something first, calls down the whole blast wherever it touched.  Naturally, high objects are usually the first things to get hit, but not when the height distance is small and the area is vast.

People get unlucky sometimes...

Whenever I have to cite that reality is crazier than fiction, I'll remember this thread.

There's a nice little village in greece, I like to spend my vacation in. And in this little village, they have this old custom: when people get married, the priest fires a salute shot, I kid you not. And there's this "funny" story about this one wedding of a young couple.

The priest fired his rifle, which he had pointed up in the sky. The bullet hit the bell in the church tower and ricocheted back down... and killed the husband.

I just can't believe it's true, but wtf, was it Mark Twain who said "Never let truth get in the way of a good story." ? Anyway, people living there claim it's true, no matter what.

If there's some sort of god ... it has a british sense of humour.

Boo!

Anyway!

What are the chances of lightling striking twice in the same place? From reading this article it sounds like a decent chance, not that anyone in that event really sounded like they even deserved it. Oh well, that's life the ultimate Rouge Like.

Quote from: Some where near the middle
Witnesses said Gonzalez collapsed after multiple lightning strikes hit the field where he was playing soccer. Church members ran to Gonzalez's aid and contacted Emergency Medical Services.

Eh, maybe I assume too much.
