In real life, hippos are, literally, the most dangerous animal on the planet, killing more people than lions and tigers and sharks combined. Seriously. I for one was not surprised.
(emphasis mine)

That's not saying much. Two of those are threatened and the other one lives in the ocean.

I want seas of blood dammit! I want to take over a goblin fortress (not hard if you go in first with an adventurer) and then cover the obsidian walls with blood by lining creatures in caves up and having marksdwarves shot or butchers slaughter them. My obsidian palace o'doom, complete with a demon cage underneath an atom smasher to show my enemies how hardcore I am.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I remember an episode of Man vs. Wild where he gave a ridiculously long list of animals whose combined total hippos top.

Found the list:  "Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Buffalo and Leopards combined"

Might be because hippos have a habit of ramming boats, and will feel threatened if you're between them and water.

I have never encountered Hippos.

Where might I find them?

Please don't say WIKI.

I have gone looking for them to no avail.

Elephants are hard enough to find.

Rivers (not brooks) in tropical biomes are where hippos may be found, IIRC.

While we're at it, could you tell me if tamed hippos will even breed? I've heard that some animals don't breed in captivity, and I wanted to know about hippos before I go to the trouble of looking for a suitable embark and then catching them.

Bear Grylls is known to have lied about a crapload of things. And would you trust a man who drinks water from elephant dung? Bear's good for entertainment value (even if his eating habits on the show are a little sickening), but for facts and survival stuff, I'd be more inclined to believe someone like Ray Mears.

Yeah, and good luck making those hippo bastards endangered.
They actually are at risk of becoming endangered because of poaching and the loss of their natural habitats. Less chance of making them extinct in the game, though :P

Yes, they will. I'm actually struggling to think of ones that wouldn't. There have always been question marks and significant doubt about the breeding prospects of megabeasts (dragons and the like) even if you mod in child tags for them, but with any standard creature that you can capture and tame, I can't think of any except the mule that wouldn't breed. All you need is for them to be tame, uncaged and for there to be a breeding pair, and your tame female will give birth to tame infants.

Hippos can bite crocodiles in half you know.

Also, vending machines kill more people than sharks.

Sharks are pretty nice, once they get to know you.

Before your post, I had yet to see the name Ray Mears mentioned in the thread.  And I figured quoting Bear Grylls was better than not quoting anything.

Somehow I don't think he makes up his own lines in Man vs Wild.  He's probably given a list of random facts to throw around whenever there's a lull in the action.

Yeah, but even if they like you, that doesn't mean they won't slash the beejebus out of your fingers when you touch them. Was at the Newport, KY/Cincinnati, OH aquarium two weeks ago, they have one of those ho-hum pet-a-shark tanks as they are on this lame-o mission to "educate" the public about how sharks aren't like what Mr. Spielberg makes them out to be. But seeing as how shark skin is the same as teeth, courtesy of their lovely exhibits for the 'ikkle ones, and you have to rub them in very specific ways, some goofy boyscout swearing gesture, it's room for lots of rednecks yanking their hands out of the pool, bleeding, to my amusement. Fascinating, though, how their freaking skin is a human finger grater.
