Oh god they werent kidding about those hippo's
« on: July 04, 2009, 11:07:36 pm »

Heh, yeah for the first time i tried to battle hippos, with wrestlers. (they arent champions)

So in the initial skirmish, i lose about 4 of my 7 wrestler dwarves as one hippo decapitates them one by one ripping chunks out of them constantly. The rest retreat, then i try i new strategy, i have a little wood left in my fort, so i arm a dwarf with a crossbow. A lone hippo charges him and it is cut down and shredded by the wooden bolts. I then procede to hunt hippos with him for a while. Them the other wrestlers are ready with some more crossbows i managed to assemble.

I procede to run off or kill all but one elusive hippo. The dwarves finnaly surround him, and they empty their clips into him. It passes out and doesent die. They then procede to feebly pummel it with their fists and bash with their bows, doing no damage whatsoever, then it wakes up, shreds a dwarf to death than passes out again. One of the two remaining dwarves throws a tantrum, and procedes to sit and do nothing with a falshing yellow icon. The other dwarf continues to pummel the hippo until it waked up again, rips four chunks out of him, then rips his head off and passes out. The one remaining wrestler calms down and i pull him back.

Im now training some champion wrestlers. I plan on giving them steel plate and axes, training them more, than confronting the hippo again.

I hope the hippo has earned himself a suitably badass name.

I remember embarking on a major river, it had like 50 hippos in it.

Within a year, I was getting 'hippo has given birth' messages...  The hippo population kept TRIPLING!

In real life, hippos are, literally, the most dangerous animal on the planet, killing more people than lions and tigers and sharks combined. Seriously. I for one was not surprised.

I was so lucky that on my first fort with a hippo infested river that my weaponsmith sprouted an artifact longsword.

I gave it to my ultra mighty miner after I had him spar with a silver short sword for some time.

He killed more then 50 hippos on his own, untill he decided to jump in the river in an attempt to chase them.

So many hippo biscuits were eaten.

That's one major problem with hippos in the game. They're like fucking rabbits, and because most are stuck in murky pools they'll just keep on breeding and can never walk off the map like other animals. On the plus side, one fort I had essentially had all the hippos outside acting as kobold detectors. There were so many hippos around that kobolds could rarely get anywhere near my fort's outer defensive wall.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

It came to me how dangerous hippo's were, besides all the dead migrants who got trampled by 'em, when I saw a hippo chase an elephant and fight it.

The elephant won of course, but first time I saw wild life give chase to each other.

"Oh god they werent kidding about those hippo's"

The funny thing is... No matter how crazy, weird, or downright strange something on the DF forums seems, they are almost never actually 'kidding.'

After all, with such an awesome and humorous game engine, who needs artificial jokes!  ;D

Not to mention they are kind of unpredictable. It's like some are bloodthirsty killers who attack unprovoked and others run at first sight. I've had them attack fresh immigrants and leave my dwarves alone at the same time.

Seriously though, they recieve the same reputation as they do in real life, and should be treated as such.

I'm NOT saying that people need to go out and kill hippos in real life of course.

If they are trapped in a murky pool which has dried up, they are easy targets for your marksdwarves, who will literally turn that murky pool into a big pool of blood.

It's a shame blood doesn't stack up.

Well, its on the 'you want a waterfall? ILL GIVE YOU A WATERFALL' map, they are breeding like rabbits in river 40 z's or so below, but everywhere else i can chase them away or shoot them.

Though i get about a 2-1 dwarf to hippo exchange rate, and i have 20 dwarves, and theres like 300 hippos'

EDIT: The hippo's name is creaturekisses.
